Madmeg Report 27 Jan 2010 00:27

Marian, I don't mind it doin me ed in, keeps the ole grey matter in shape (I think!).

Can I recap the last few pages, now we are on different families?. It helps me, and it might help you. Shout if I have got anything wrong, but I have been as careful as I can be.

Our starting point now is the marriage of Thomas Tedstone and Mary Jane Bradford in 1892. Witnesses Benjamin and Mary Darwood. Thomas's father is Thomas, the policeman, which we doubt. I have squinted at this many times trying to make out a different occupation, it isn't 100% crystal clear, but it looks like policeman. If anyone can think of something different that it might be, please suggest.

We have only found one Thomas Tedstone b 1876. In 1871 he is with William 1821, Eliza 1822, Sarah 1855, Mary 1865, Robert 1863, Thomas 1867, these last two nephews. And in 1881 with the same family. The young boys may be cousins rather than brothers, according to the Ancestry tree.

Mary Tedstone who married Benjamin Darwood, is the one with Thomas in 1871. His cousin.

In 1887, Sarah Tedstone above married Charles Pressdee, had 2 children and died, cos in 1891 Charles is a widower, living with mother in law Eliza Letstone 71. In 1901 Eliza is with Benjamin Darwood and family, and still there in 1911. So that is that bit of the family.

So, is this Eliza Letstone the Elizabeth b 1822 that is in the Ancestry tree? I think not. That tree has her as daughter of John Tedstone and Charlotte Francis, and I think she is more likely the wife of William. In fact we have no indicatation that she is the daughter of John and Charlotte - do we?

Well, the next connection is the nephew/cousin Robert above, b 1863.

He could be the illegitimate son of Martha Tedstone b 1835, who later married William Jones and had children Charlotte Mary and Annie Lavinia. So then we set about finding Martha Tedstone 1835.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this one:

1871 England Census
about Martha Tedston
Name: Martha Tedston
Age: 32
Estimated birth year: abt 1839
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Aston On Clun, Shropshire, England
Civil parish: Barton Upon Irwell
Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary
Town: Eccles
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Registration district: Barton Upon Irwell
Sub-registration district: Barton
ED, institution, or vessel: 1
Household schedule number: 136
Household Members: Name Age
John Pearson 47
Catharine Pearson 42
Kate Pearson 7
William Pearson 6
Martha Tedston 32 b Aston on Clun
Mary A Radcliffe 13
Joseph Hall 21

Anyways up, these are the other Tedstone families found:

1841 Thomas Davies 30, Charlotte Davies 50, Martha Davis 6, William Tedstone 20, John Tedstone 15, Charlotte Tedstone 6.

Thomas Davies married Charlotte Tedstone 1836 - is this the above pair? She 20 years older than him?

1851 William Tedstone 30 (unm), Charlotte Davis mother 64, widow, Charlotte Tedstone 24 sister, Martha Tedstone 16, sister, Lueza Tedstone 2 niece. (daughter of Charlotte)

1861 Charlotte Davies 75, Martha Tedstone 25, William Harding 1, nephew
1861 William Griffiths 30, Charlotte 32 (m 1859), Lueza 12, Emily 6, John 9m
1861 William Tedstone 40, Eliza 38, Harriet Price 13, George Price 9, Sarah Tedstone 6.

1871 Not a lot of luck.

1881 William Jones 29, Martha 35 (nee Tedstone), Charlotte Mary 6, Annie Lavinia 3.

1891 William Jones 39, Martha 45, Charlotte 16, Annie 13, Harry Tedstone 9 nephew, George Warner 24, EDIT and Robert G Tedstone 28, Stepson.

Charlotte 16 is born Dunkinfield, could she be the illegitimate daughter of Martha born while she was a servant in Barton 1871+?

So this is now my understanding - shoot me down.

John Tedstone c 1790 m Charlotte Francis. Children William 1820, John 1824, Robert George 1826, Charlotte 1829, Martha 1855. EDIT I meant 1835.

William Tedstone m Eliza Price (when?), dau Sarah 1855 appears in 1861 only, dau Mary m Benjamin Darwood.

John Tedstone m Jane Harrington. Nothing more.

Robert George Tedstone m Jane Rack (married name), several kids, inc Robert George 1855.

Charlotte 1829 had Lucy 1849, Emily 1855, then m William Griffiths, two more children.

Martha had Robert George 1862, then married William Jones, children Charlotte M 1875, Annie Lavinia 1878.

There is just this oddity about Martha 1835. She is okay in 1841, 1851 and 1861, no sign in 1871 unless in Lancashire, and in 1881 has lost 10 years, which continues to be lost in 1891 when Robert George pitches up. I haven't found a marriage for William Jones and Martha Tedstone. Not found reasonable births of Charlotte M and Annie Lavinia either.

Well, that's me done in now!

Marian, I'd stick with the cert for Thomas Tedstone first. Let's see what it says.

I know it all takes time, and is frustrating, but you can't go throwing money around without good reason.

No, his father probably won't be a policeman, but let's see.

Poor Marion. Its costing you plenty getting all these certs without anything concrete so far.

Lets hope you do get to the bottom of it

Hi all, sent for Thomas Tedstone birth cert 1867 Clun, should I also get the marriage of Mary Tedstone & Benjamin Darwood? Had a look at the photo of Aunty Darwood on the Hayball tree, some sort of resemblance but nothing outstanding. I'm sorry all this is doing your heads in, maybe something will turn up on the certs. Thank you all! Marian

Mary Report 25 Jan 2010 11:04

Hayball tree has John Tedstone married to Jane Harrington his parents John and Charlotte.
Other trees have John married to jane harrington but have his parents as John tedstone and Mary Powell.

So who is correct I don't know.

Charlotte Tedstone married Thomas Davies in 1836.... so presumably husband John died prior to that.

I wonder if the 1840 John Tedstone death is in fact her son....I found a John with the other siblings baptisms records on the IGI on page 11.

Extracted Marriage entry IGI....

Can i ask rather thsan go through it all again.

John Tedstone died 1840?and on 1841 census Charlotte his widow is Davis so when and who did she marry.
On same 1841 census there is son Thomas Davis age 20 = 1821 and Martha Davis age 6 daughter and with them at same address Charlotte Tedstone 6.and William etc
I have looked for Thomas Davis and Thomas tedstone born @ 1820.
Found thomas Tedstone around that age but no Thomas Davis.

I too have spent hours trying to unravel and went through all siblings of Martha and their marriages to find parents of thomas 1867 but nothing came of it.

Elizabeth seemed to be the elusive one, unless this thomas off 1841 census has something to do with it.

Maryb

Edit, sorry just looked again at 1841 its Thomas Davies born 1811 not 1820 back to drawing board.

Well if the birth cert. of Thomas Tedstone 1867 Clun does give Thomas Tedstone Policeman as father, then he is someone we have no trace of...but just getting mothers name will be a help, if its legitimate birth there will be a marriage etc to find.......I await with baited breath....

Mary and Nicky, I am a noddy, thank you for pointing that out.

So Robert 1862 is likely son of Martha, and Thomas we have no idea about. So the birth cert might help.

We can keep spending Marian's money, but she probably also needs to get the marriage of Mary Tedstone to Benjamin Darwood to prove that we are on the right family, given that we have no Thomas Tedstone, Policeman. Do you think? Unless, of course, the birth cert of Thomas says his father is a policeman.

Phew.

Think Marian is only getting the Thomas Tedstone born 1867 Clun Cert.

Though i really don`t think it will show father as Thomas Tedstone Policeman, as explained in earlier post, I really do think this IS the one that married Mary Jane Bradford in 1892...there are NO Thomas Tedstones of a similar age.....

The Ancestry tree looks well researched (though no sources), but there is a contradiction in that one comment says that Robert (the one we thought was brother of Thomas), is the son of Martha and another comment says he is the son of Robert George.

Ah, stupid me, there are two Robert Georges. One is born 1855, son of Robert George and wife Jane Rock, and one born 1862, illegitimate som of Martha. One of them (forgotten which one) is the pub landlord.

Here is what the tree says as far as I can understand it. All in Shropshire in the earlier years.

John Tedstone m Charlotte Francis. No birth for him, died 1840. She 1786-1862. Six children.

William 1820-1883 m Eliza Price, children Sarah 1855, Mary 1864. Would seem to be the Mary who married Benjamin Darwood.

Elizabeth 1822. Nothing more on her.
John 1824-1901, married Jane Harrington. Nothing more.

Robert George 1826-1895 m Jane Rack, children George 1852, Robert George 1855, Charlotte 1857, Betsy 1859.

Charlotte 1829. Two illegitimate children, Lucy 1849, Emily 1855, then marries William Griffiths in 1859, children John 1860 and Samuel 1866.

Martha 1835. Illegitimate child Robert George 1862. Then marries William Jones, has Charlotte 1875 and Annie Lavinia 1878.

Unfortunately the tree does not connect "our" Thomas Tedstone b 1867 with any of this lot. But he clearly is connected somehow.

So the birth cert in Clun 1867 is the only way forward. I will tell Marian to hold fire on the marriage of Robert George, likely different parents.

Oh, it's too much for me. This Ancestry tree has buckets of Tedstones. Marrying Prices, Davies's and Griffiths. But not a Thomas in sight other than the disconnected one.

I'll send a message to Jane Hayball. EDIT sent

Meg, Isn't this the Mary Tedstone who married Darwood, posted earlier.

Here is Eliza Tedstone mistranscribed in 1871 and presume daughter Mary who married Benjamin Darwood. Living with them is Thomas Tedstone, nephew, born Clungunford, Shropshire. Could this be the Thomas we are looking for.

This family gets more intriguing by the minute.......Hope Marian follows up the GR link to Jennie Bradford that Quinsgran posted.. EDIT.....sorry just seen she is already in touch with them.....

not the only one having a glass of Orange juice tonight...though mines Rose coloured!!!

Happy Birthday for tommorow Meg.........we`re getting an Indian takeaway delivered later....

If Thomas is a cousin of Robert, he could be the son of John or Robert George...though I think i`ve seen Robert George through the census and he was Pub landlord, so don`t think it could be him.

The Tedstones are doin me ed in!

Can't work it all out, but it is Saturday night, and I've had a couple of glasses (of orange juice?) and it is my birthday tomorrow, so we are having a steak. Tonight.

The marriage cert of Mary Jane Bradford and Thomas Tedstone had witnesses Benjamin and May or Mary Darwood. May was a Tedstone, born 1865. A fair assumption that she is a relative.

But none of your fantastic searches have turned up a May or Mary Tedstone.

Well, how interesting - see this link, those of you that can get onto Ancestry:

http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/pt/ViewPhoto.aspx?tid=3102734&pid=-1396874606&iid=9be7ec68-d081-4bdf-9b38-3736fe8a932b&src=search

It is "Auntie Darwood", attached to Mary Tedstone, on the tree of Jane Hayball, the one with the unattached Thomas.

How did that pop up?

There is even a photo - MARIAN, IS THERE ANY FAMILY RESEMBLANCE?: She looks a nice, bright lady.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 23 Jan 2010 19:20

The Ancestry tree just says March 1867, no exact date. But interestingly a note thereon says that Robert is not the brother of Thomas, but is another cousin, son of Martha.

There is absolutely nothing more there about Thomas. He is sort of hanging in space with no parents, no siblings, no spouse.

Carolyn and Stephen are both in touch with Marian.

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 23 Jan 2010 13:05

yes the Hayball one ...

Have Cand P what i can view...definetly gives DOB as 1st March 1867....

Name: Thomas Tedstone
Birth: 01 Mar 1867 - Hopesay, Shropshire, England
Residence: 1881 - Hopesay, Shropshire, England

So if they don`t have the parents or parent...how do they know the DOB??
