Please could anyone tell me how I can find an American birth?
William Americus Parker born Chicago 1855/1856. His parents were Thomas and Jane, both British. Jane was born in Keswick 1831/2.

Hi Norma,
Have tried to do a search for william but nothing came up, i searched for thomas a few came up but jane didnt, will try again when ive put daughter to bed

There's a tree on Ancestry with William Americus Parker born 1855, Chicago but no exact date and no parents named. He married Fanny Smithies 3 June 1878, Liverpool, Lancs. Four children are listed.

They're on the 1860 census in Chicago.
Thomas, 39, tailor, born England
Jane, wife, 29, born"
William, son, 4, born Illinois
Elizabeth, dau, 2, born "
Plus a female servant, 20, born Bohemia.

In 1871 Jane has remarried. Husband is Richard Barton. They're living in Bootle, Lancashire. Stepson William A. Parker 15, born America is with them.

It was not mandatory in the State of Illinois for records to be filed with the County Clerk until January 1, 1916. It is possible that a birth or death occurred and no records were officially filed with the County Clerk’s office. However, if a record were filed prior to 1916, it would have been filed in the county where the event occurred.

There are eight million genealogy records in the Cook County Bureau of Vital Records. Records are added to the database frequently. If your record does not appear, check back again.

Please note, the Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871 destroyed all Cook County vital records prior to that date. After some rebuilding, record keeping resumed in 1872.

NB In the USA, BMDs are called vital records.
