Canada - Montreal marriages

Am I right in thinking that it is extremely difficult to get copies of Canadian marriage certificates? I have a relative who was married in 1923 in Montreal, Quebec Province and I would like to see a copy of the marriage cert so I can see who the parents were.

I have checked on line and it looks very complicated and expensive and you have to prove your identity and why you want a copy. Is that correct and has anyone been successful in obtaining a copy marriage cert?

Yes, that's the situation as regards the civil record of BMDs thru the 1960s.
However, the civil record was basically just a copy of the record in the parish register, and one can obtain copies of these privately held records - a bit of a bizarre situation, but there it is.

You may not see who the parents were - I've only got 2 Quebec marrs (my dad's uncle and cousin). His uncle is described as Joseph Massie, widower of the late Elizabeth Paterson - his bride as Rebecca Moir Wyness, d/o James Wyness and his wife Jane Noble (Montreal 1918).
His cousin's marr has no parental info, just the marr of George Norrie Rennie Massie to Susannah Minchinton, both of Grand Greve and both of major age. (Susannah's bro Alfred is a witness) (Peninsula, Gaspe 1921).

The records and their images were gotten from Ancestry -
Quebec Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967
I don't have the right sub to see full details of searches.
