Lorraine and Maura,
I think I have found it!
1901 census contains a Niece called Eliza Lyons.

Samuel Evans was born 1 Feb 1879 in Terrydrean.
He was the son of WILLIAM EVANs and MARGARET LYON
Other Children born into this marriage:

Eliza Jane Evans b 12 Dec 1872 Londonderry
William James Evans 9 Dec 1874 Banagher
Robert Alexander Evans b 9 Oct 1876 Londonderry

Margaret Lyon had 7 children in total
From 1901 return there were also John b 1872 and Maggie born 1879.

This accounts for all 6 living children.but....

Looks like sonJohn Evans married in Canada in 1907. Parents on marriage cert: William Evans and Margaret Lyon

You've lost me Anne, what do you mean.

Hi Maura,
I wondered if the head of household had simply been ommitted from the census and decided to look at the bottom to see who signed it!

Maura

Maura Report 10 Jan 2012 16:54

LOL Anne, I never even thought of scrolling down, so it looks like we're on the right track.

GlasgowLass Report 10 Jan 2012 16:25

Hi Maura and Lorraine
Did you scroll down on the 1901 census for the Evans family at 22 Terrydean?
William James age 26 is entered as son and he signed the return but it also has a message written across it:

"HEAD OF FAMILY IS ON VISIT TO SCOTLAND."
I also looked at this 3xtimes before it occurred to me to scroll down the page.... DUH!!

if you find this same family in 1911, they still live at 22 Terrydean and the mother is now in the household but she is a widow.
Therefore: William J Evans b 1875 and and Samuel Evans b 1879 were brothers and their mother was called Margaret
Born in Co Derry circa 1850.
Married for 40 yrs. 7 children born and 6 still living

Leyther Report 10 Jan 2012 15:22

that's great, yes was just clarifying it included the WIlliam James b. 1913 you gave me earlier : )

I am still unsure on the 1901 find for William James aged 26? My William James was born 1913, and we believe his Father was William, but could now be Samuel (Likely)...the Father was a farmer too we think.
So this William aged 26, listed as SON .... could this be Samuels Brother Maybe? is the Samuel on the list THE Samuel we are talking about in 1911?

Thanks for your patience

Lorraine

Maura Report 10 Jan 2012 15:13

I have already given you William james birth for 1913, his father's name was probably mistranscribe as Annie instead of Samuel, his mother was a Annie Eakins. There's no sites online that have full BMD's for Ireland North or South. There is a Claudy in .Co. Derry. As for the 1901 census, the only thing I can think is that William James was not the head of the household, maybe his father was still living just not present at the time the census was taken.

Hello Again
Just digesting the census info above....it shows Samuel and Annie in 1911 ....which seems fine. Is the 1901 record for WIlliam James aged 26 (son) related or just a record showing a William James for reference? Sorry, I am a tad confused (maybe because I am looking at it at work instead of working haha)...

thanks

Thank you Maura
Would the list of children for Samuel and Annie above also include William James 1913? Again if so so, this is then looking very liikely to be the right one if I have Wilfred, William, Herbert and John as siblings. Could there be missing records that don't show Wilfred if he was born after 1915 maybe?

Your advice and help greatly appreciated

Has anyone heard of a place called CLAUDEY in Ireland? Again, this is a place being mentioned - does it relate to any of the places with Samuel Evans above?

Thanks

Childrern of Samuel Evans & Annie Eakins

Samuel 1907
John Ernest 1911
Herbert 1915

If Samuel is the right father and died 1926, you won't get Annie's remarriage online, records for N. Ireland stop around 1921. The only place you'll get this information is from GRONI in Belfast.

Wow - a lot of info here that I am going to certainly get stuck into : ) I am so thankful to you for this.

It is good that it lists Mother as Annie as that is the info I have been given.... Mother Annie, Father WILLIAM...children William James, Herbert Ellis, Wilfred & John... (Known as Jack). I have no idea whether or not the Brother were older or younger than WIlliam James.
YOur findings show Father Samuel and mentions farmer, and my Mother in Law says they lived on a farm...so wonder if she just got William James' Fathers name wrong? Afterall, she would be going off some old stories/memories?

I am also told the Father WIlliam (or Samuel?) died youngish and Annie re-married a man named McFarland? He was possibly in the navy.

Is there any way of linking this together now from the resources you have?

You are right though, I deffinately need to get a birth cert purchased now to see what Fathers name it gives...I have a feeling Samuel is correct afterall : )

Thanks again SO MUCH

Thank you Maura.
All these wee bits of info confirm that I have located the correct ancestors.

My gg grandfather married both times in the SAME church.
His 2nd marriage confirms he was a widower, but does not name the 1st wife.
His death record however, provides the names of both wives.

Lorraine
It might be better to purchase the birth record from goireland.ie ans suggested by mgnv.
Transcribed records can and DO contain mis-transcriptions.
The 1st cert I ever purchased from rootsireland.ie sent me off on a wild goose chase that lasted over a year because the bride's maiden name had been misread by the transcriber!
I eventually got a copy of the actual parish record and realised what had happened.
Maiden name was McGrory but transcribed as McGarvey.

Maura,
Thank you.
I may get this. I would be surprised if cause of death was not from childbirth, but I suppose it may give me the address where the family lived before her widower remarried and moved to Glasgow.
Would you know if Long Tower and St Columbs in Derry is the same RC church?
Someone told me this, but could not find anything to confirm it.

Anne, groireland.ie that mgnv listed is the best place to get Irish cert,

Irish death certs are not like Scottish cert, irish certs give you,

Name
date of death
address
age
martial statue
Cause of death
The informant name & address

Hi Maura,
Could you help me with something?
My gg grandmother died in Derry in 1867.
Her death is held on Ancestry
Her name was Margaret Brannan ( Variants) maiden name was McGrath.
How would I obtain her death cert and what info would it contain?

I strongly suspect that she died from a complication of childbirth as her son,
(my great grandfather) was born in Derry in Nov 1867.

The family moved to Glasgow where my great grandfather married
.... and history repeated itself in 1890 when his 1st wife ( my great grandmother) died from childbirth complications, just 10 days after the birth of my grandfather.

Thanks
Anne
