GEDCOM information missing

Hi

I've downloaded a GEDCOM from GR today but when I've uploaded it elsewhere, not only does it have 2012 listed as the year of birth for me and many others, lots of information hasn't transferred, i.e. parents.

Is there any way I can change this?

Also, censuses haven't attached. Anything I can do?

Thanks in advance.

Lindsey

I have mentioned this problem on http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/suggestions/thread/1308375
but no one else has commented.

I used Roots Magic to list the errors and am now correcting those dates.

The fault seems to be that the old tree did not have enough space for the full date so if you had put day and month in, it assumes 2012 as the year instead of taking the year from the birth year field.

Hmm, not sure whether that's my problem. Arthur French was my great grandfather. I remember entering his information on GR because of lack of father and other piece of information.

Having downloaded and uploaded GEDCOM, he's a stand-alone with no mother or year of birth. His grandfather was well known and I remember precisely his place of birth, year, occupation etc. but he's disappeared.

What should I do?

Yes my problem only refers to the 2012 date thing. So far I haven't found anything else missing and I don't have Platinum so can't attach censuses.

I did find a spurious Mary unknown, who had a birthplace but no other information and she was not attached to anyone, but I have had similar unattached people when using gedcoms from the old tree.

I wondered whether it was because of the size of download but it didn't state it at the time.

I can't imagine having to trawl back over 5,000 people to check dates and attach their lifetime's censuses ... :-(

Thanks for looking Ken.

Firstly I would delete the transferrred data and 'old' GEDCOM and try again.

But a GEDCOM file is only going to transfer names DOB, DOD & the basic info
no notes or photos will be transferred and no census etc.

GEDCOM was created by the Mormon church as a tool for transferring data on their own system. It has been adapted from this basic form by most Genealogical sites and because not all sites are compatible it becomes an inelegant tool.

But something similar happened to me when I transferred my tree from here to Ancestry, I was a bit daunted at first, but I looked on it as a chance to get to know my ancestors all over again, and 1 year later have a tree which I am happy with and have reaquainted myself with a lot of old friends :-)

Thanks for that. Maybe I just need to take a very deep breath and start over ... Gulp!

It's good to know that the reason things haven't transferred is because there's a technical glitch rather than something incorrect I've done.

Thanks agai.
