Okay, He died 9th August 1945 aged 70 in islington Vol 1b pg 189. So, yes thats exactly right. I dont know if he was married previously, but the reason he never married Jessie Vaux, nee Warr is that she was already married. Her husband filed for divorce but she never completed it.
Mother in law gave his date of birth as 5th Februar 1875.
However, she also said he had a brother George, so the above looks promising. And, 27 Shepperton Road is where my mother in law was born!
It looks like he was married before and the wife and kids left and he moved Jessie in......
How did you find the 1926 record? If fact how do you guys find stuff so fast?
:-D Thanks, I will go and have a look at the stuff you found and see if I can connect him.

In 1828 in Islington there's a WAMarshall with Ellen Deere

What's the name of William's partner?

In 1929 there's a William Alfred Marshall with an Amy Agnes in Willesden.

This combination of names is not common: most of them are the other way round.

Just a thought. Is it likely that someone 53 years old (1875~1928) would be in the army?

Interestingly Jansmith, this is the man on that Ancestry tree. His wife was Charlotte Rosetta Beetles. They had 6 children.
According to them his birthdate was 14.10.1875. His wife re-married just 6 weeks after he died (she was 64) , which implies to me that the marriage might well have been over.
Maybe he is our fella then!

Another question! Do you know why he didn't marry your grandmother? I assume he was already married, particularly as he would have been about 53 when your mother was born.

Is this the death you mean? Not sure if certs gave birthplace at this time.

Name: William A Marshall
Birth Date: abt 1875
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1945
Age at Death: 70
Registration district: Islington
Inferred County: Greater London

EDIT a tree on Ancestry has this man, I don't think it's yours is it? They do have him as a marble cutter though, interestingly.

Hi - 'unknown'!
Welcome to the boards.
Firstly, his death cert might well show birthplace, assuming the informant knew it. Do you know who the informant was? If not, it's worth getting for this info. alone.
Also check for matches with other members - you never know! Use 'search all trees', found under search box above right.

He is the grandfather of my husband. My mother in law gave me his date of birth and his name, but as she is getting a bit senile I can't guarantee where he was born. She says he was Irish. I know he was never married to her mother, so that line of investigation is out.
The information I have is 5th February 1875. Maybe in Cork. But he was in Islington when my mother in law was born. She says he was in the army then (1928) but doesnt remember when he left the forces. He was a stone mason after that.
I have a death record. Would the death certificate give me any indication of his birth?
Anyone have any ideas of how to find him? I have only just started at this, and although I have found some lovely people with some great info on other parts of the family, I just cant find him! :-S
