Tracing ancestors that were born in Lagos Nigeria?

Is there anyway these ancestors could be traced back? My great great grandfather came from Lagos - I even know the tribe although it is a vast tribe. He was the reason i started on my family tree quest and now I'm stuck at him. I know he came over on a ship and was what we call a donkeyman in the engine room, but again we dont know the name of the ship either. Hoping someone can help with this :-)

HI Verity.
I don't know anything personally, but have you tried googling 'nigerian genealogy'? Various sites come up, including at least one forum, which might be of help.
When did he marry? If you can get a marriage cert that would help - possibly!

Thanks Jan, I'll try that now. Im not even sure where he was married. Probably in this country though. He married a Edith Anstice from Somerset and she became the blacksheep of the family.

Well, there are only 4 marriages for an Edith Anstice, so if you haven't already I would double-check for the marriage on Freebmd, you never know.
