Wonder if anyone can advise me what to do; looking for info on my grandad's line but can't even find him in the census- I know his birthdate exactly but I can't find him registered where I know they lived or ever after until a marriage record. Welcome any advice!

Cheers, Julie

hello Julie

Was he born in Scotland or abroad, changed his name. Does An***try have military, or school records if he was born in London? Try searching for years either side. Does he have brothers or sisters whose names you can search for, to give you an area he may have been born in. My dad's family assumed a different name to escape family anger and some of the children have names that bear no relevance to their correct surname.

Thanks Jill and Andrew that's a big help; I had a breakthrough and found his mam and dad! Had a very exciting half hour thanks to my mam. But now have lost the thread of his dad as he's not in any census either.
His Dad was called Dawson Nicholson born in Winlaton Co Durham in 1870, so really grateful if anyone can shed light on him.

Cheers, Julie

Julie

Welcome to the GR Boards

just a note that may help you .....................

birth years on a census may be up to 2 years out of synch with the known birth year.

The residents were asked for their age in years, and the modern-day transcriber had to change that into a birth year ......................... hence the fact that someone's birth year may differ.

It all depends on a person's actual birth date vs the date on which the census was taken.

Added to this is that people often did not know exactly how old they were ........ and this gets worse the further back you go. Birth dates and age were just not as important as we think them

So, always search for birth year +/- 2

You will also find that the 1841 Census is different again .........................

the enumerators were supposed to round DOWN the age of any person over the age of 15 to the nearest 5 ..........

this means that anyone shown as age 20 could actually have been age 20-24

so you search on the 1841 for birth year +/- 5

You do have to be wary ............... not all enumerators did as they were supposed to!!

Good luck
