Teresa With Irish Blood in Me Veins Report 19 Jan 2013 22:32

A couple of years ago I purchased an old photo album which contain many Victorian and Edwardian studio photos most taken in Manchester.

Loose inside is a cutdown black and white postcard photo of Mr Edward Dunn, Director of Music, Morecambe Corporation in is band uniform.

Can anyone claim this photograph? :-)

There are loads of Edward Dunn's on here...... but as I don't know where exactly he was born and when, not a lot of good in sending messages to all and sundry.

Might it be worth contacting Morecambe council or the main library? They might have some archives that relate to him, who knows!

Article in the Western Daily Press - Saturday 31 August 1929

JAN HURST'S SUCCESSOR
In succession to Mr Jan Hurst, who has left to go to Brighton, the Bath Spa Committee yesterday appointed Mr Edward Dunn, ARCM, MISM, at present musical director of the Victoria Pier, Blackpool. He was formerly director of Morecambe.

It is a strange coincidence that Mr Jan Hurst was formerly at the Victoria Pier.

Mr Dunn was selected from 174 applicants, six of whom were interviewed by the Spa committee yesterday.

A young and keen director, Mr Dunn is likely to maintain the high traditions of Bath's music. He took a degree at the age of 16 and was a conductor at the age of 17. He is a distinguished pianist. In 1921 he founded the Manchester Academy of Music.

The Bath municipal concerts commence in October.

(Shame it didn't say how old he was when appointed).

Have just found another article (way too long to type out).

In 1935 Edward Dunn resigned from Bath to take up a post as a musical director in Durban, South Africa. He is described as aged 40 and a native of Manchester.

The age on this doesn't tie in with the newspaper article:

Passenger lists leaving UK 1890-1960

Name: Mr E DUNN
Date of departure: 25 October 1935
Port of departure: Southampton
Destination port: Durban (Port Natal)
Destination country: South Africa

Date of Birth: 1906 (calculated from age)
Age: 29 - AGE IS 39 ON IMAGE
Marital Status:

Notes:
Passenger recorded on: Page 3 of 19

Had lived 218 Ayres Road, Old Trafford, Manchester.

Hard to tell, but the entry below him looks as though he had a nurse travelling with him, a Miss M C Barbour (29). No other family indicated.

The above articles were from the British Newspaper Archives but there's plenty on Google.

An item about his son:

Teresa, I also came across a shipping record in the 1930s for Napier Dunn, brother Roger and mother Madeleine returning to England for a visit.

If Edward' s descendants are in SA would be hard to find.

Napier died 2005.
