John was single until he married in 1914, and lived with his widowed mother at Clogganagh in the DED of Buckhill.
The information on Rootsireland looks hopeful, thank you for that. I need to purchase some credit on that site and have a good look at the records.

Strange that no-one in the entire extended family has ever realised/mentioned that the keenans who lived down the road were related!

If I was you I would check out the birth on rootsireland.ie

It may all depend on how big a search Roscommon did, if it was on a 5 year search that they did, then the birth 1865 would not of come up. You give the year 1868, they would of search that year and 2 years either side.

Maura- when in Dublin I went to the National Archives and National Library. The library doesn't have the Tibohine parish records. The Archives had the indexes of registrations but I couldn't find a birth for round 1868. I rang the registration office at Roscommon and they found 5 births registered but none with a father named Martin.

The IGI site seems to be putting more stuff on every month. This is the first time I've seen these births on there.
Next weekend I'm going to the London Family History Centre and I'm hoping to look at some of these films to see if they have more detail on them.
Meantime it sounds as though possibly they just didn't go in for civil registration. The house is in the middle of nowhere even now, and I've no reason to think that they had any "spare" money.

The Keenans living with John Lynch in Buckhil are his sister Marys children, she married Michael Keenan 1892 Tibohine-fairymount R.C. Roscommon her fathers a Martin

Where in the census is John living, as the only one I can find age 28 in 1901 & 43 1911 was a single man in Buckhill

Maureen, have you contacted Roscommon about his birth or have you just looked on familysearch.org for it?

Birth registration started in Ireland in 1864 but I wonder if it took a while for people to realise that they had to register births and not just baptisms (this happened in England a lot).

Some early births where not registered especially in rural areas, as the nearest registry could of been miles away or they had'nt the money to register a birth.

Just had a look at Rootsireland and John's civil birth is definitely showing. Registration 1865 with correct parents, Registration district Frenchpark (CP)
Rootsireland have transcribed docs only but,... the info must have come from his original birth record?

I have sometimes wondered if Rootsireland transfer info taken from a baptism and convert it to also create a birth record.
In this instance the site does NOT have a baptism record only a birth?

Thanks for those. Unfortunately my mother has no recollection of any aunts or uncles on her father's side and none of them show up in the 1901 census with the family though I suspect that there was a sister who'd married and moved out because there are a neice & nephew there. None of my cousins has any idea that grandad might have had siblings.
John's age in 1901 is given as 28 but in 1911 as 43, which doesn't help with an exact year of birth!
What I can't understand is that there is no record of John Lynch's birth in the Irish Records Office. Was civil registration not complete in rural areas?

I know that from about 1864 civil registration of RC BMD became law but does anyone know whether rural families conformed or did some of them still just rely on church registration?
I ask because I'm struggling to find my grandfather's birth or his parents deaths all of which I believe to have happened between 1865 and 1917.
I tried in Dublin when I visited, as well as online where I might have found the birth (John Lynch born to Martin Lynch and Mary, nee Rodgers) but no luck with any deaths.
Any thoughts most welcome.
