.......coloured photos of London in 1940. I found it very interesting as my father in law was in the National Fire Brigade fighting the fires.

Hello Miss Gai - that photo is amazing. Haven't they been coloured well?

The colouring is fabulous and it's hard to believe that the images have been
coloured.

The impact of them being in colour makes you realise what a terrible time
it was in London during WW2.

Thank you for this link, Sue

My dad worked down in London (restricted employment) during the first few months of the war.

I'm not sure whether he was actually there during any of the bad bombing ................ bur he certainly picked up some excellent tips from his landlady, re how to stop house windows breaking from concussion waves if a bomb fell nearby

That meant we were the only house to still have unbroken windows after a bomb did fall nearby in our northern town.

i remember when Charlton station got a direct hit one Saturday lunchtime in 1944. In those days people worked a half day on a Sat. and a packed train had just left the station when the air raid warning went . Mum was cleaning the front steps and she wasnt going to be stopped from putting the whitening on the step . we were sent indoors.

I decided I wanted the loo so went out back to the loo that was accessed in the back of the house. When the bomb went off my big sister got worried for me so she put on Dads slippers to come to find me. all the window s were blown out and there was glass everywhere and she got cut feet cos she couldn't keep dads big slippers on .

I got a big telling off for sisters cuts .

The Co-Op butchers that was just above the station got destroyed together with the staff and some customers. They found some blasted remains still in the big walk in cold store.
