Sylvia - I presume it's a time dependent thing for you as Westmorland has 100% coverage for 1861/71

Sylvia - the ability to click on adjacent h/h's vanished with the FS beta site that was the precursor to the current site. Although it's less useful now as most sites let you view the whole page image, and click onto adjacent pages - well, LAC don't, but you can easily alter my above URL:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e327/e008161920.pdf
to http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e327/e008161921.pdf for the next page, or end with e008161919.pdf for the previous page.
However, it is still useful in Scotland, as SP charge 1.40 GBP for each adjacent image. Often, I click thru adjacent h/h's to locate a recognizable address - not all farms are marked on maps, and not all 19th cent streets still exist.

Re FreeCEN - for coverage, check:
http://www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html
For Lancs, they have 47% of 1861 and 8% of 1891, but it's variable - for Wigan RD, they have 1 of 20 1861 pieces transscribed, but 8 of 24 1891 pieces. More specifically:

1891 RG12 8 of 24
SD1 3045-3046 Standish 1 of 2
SD2 3047-3048 Aspull 0 of 2
SD3 3049-3056 Wigan 1 of 8
SD4 3057-3062 Hindley 1 of 6
SD5 3063-3065 Pemberton 3 of 3
SD6 3066 Upholland 0 of 1
SD7 3067-3068 Ashton-in-Makerfield 2 of 2

mgnv ...........

Hi

when did familysearch stop having the ability to switch from neighbour to neighbour on the 1881 transcriptions?

I used to dislike the fact that you could not see the image .................. but the transcriptions were useful, especially in my early days of genealogy research, and that switching to look up and down the street was very useful!

I never can find anything on FreeCEN or FreeREG ............. one of these days, they'll get around to having my guys on there .................... I hope!

NS - not quite true - there is no free image for the English 1881 census.
Years ago, when one searched the census on FS one got the choice of transcriptions of the English/Welsh 1881 census (no doubt misidentified as the British census, or the UK census), the Canadian 1881 census, the US 1880 census, or all 3. None were then or are now linked to free images, although they now exist for the US and Canada.

For the US, do a look up and get, say, Adolphus Lott:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MFNS-XVG
The key bits of info are:
Event Place: Dallas, Texas, United States
Affiliate Film Number: T9-1299
GS Film number: 1255299
Digital Folder Number: 004244719
Image Number: 00300
Now use these for a look up at
http://archive.org/details/1880_census
(Some years, the NARA reel # is not explicit, but the last 3 digits of the reel # match those of the film #)
Drill down, guess a page, and look up a name on that page and adjust your guess to get (in this case) to:
http://archive.org/stream/10thcensus1299unit#page/n297/mode/1up

For Canada, doing a look up of:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MVJR-W5X
use a link at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.009-e.html
The LAC link gets you to the image:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e327/e008161920.pdf

James Slessor Snr was my g grandad's uncle - here he is in 1841:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VY8C-3LN

The UK FS censuses don't give h/h composition, apart from England/Wales 1871 & 1881, so they're not very helpful - here's the FreeCEN transcription:

1841 Census
Piece: SCT1841/218 Place: Longside -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Longside Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 1 Page: 6
Address: Hillhead Of Mintlaw
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
SLESSOR Wm M 55 Carrier Aberdeenshire
SLESSOR Chris F 45 Aberdeenshire
Page: 1/7 SLESSOR Jane F 10 Aberdeenshire
SLESSOR John M 8 Aberdeenshire
SLESSOR Jas M 6 Aberdeenshire

FreeCEN has very patchy coverage, but they're good for the earlier Scottish censuses. I like their display, and the ability to click to transcriptions of adjacent h/h's (adjacent in the census summary book, that is). FS used to have that ability, but no longer does.

I know what you mean
The new site has masses of updated & new records.

However, the transcriptions of the records are free but to look at the actual census records except 1881 and some of the other records it now say you have to pay FMP or other organisations.

Seems IGI was some business arrangement with these companies

There's a variety of options and requirements for viewing images. Here's a sample:

Here's a couple of unrestricted ones:
England, Diocese of Durham Bishops' Transcripts ca., 1700-1900

However, this image has been transcribed and indexed (most haven't), but when I look them up:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FMYG-89V
it says no image available.

I've no idea who a "supporting organization" is, so you'ld probably need to go to an FS centre for this one:
England, Northumberland, ...aneous Records, 1570-2005 > Northumberland > Chirton > Electoral registers, 1908 (ER5-23)

Finally, there are some where you have to register to view for free:
Texas, Birth Certificates, 1903-1935; Wisconsin 1885

AND, you do not have to register.

I have been using that site for years ................ there has been a tab in the top right saying "Register" for several of those years (at least).

That is now more obvious that it was

I have never registered at any time.

I have been told, and I do not know how accurate this is ............... that you have to register if you go to one of their Family History offices, and do work there. OR if you want to order a disc from them

Did you mean 'AN'other one, or somewhere else?

1837-1915 ought to be free where ever you look, and obviously Freebmd is the same.

Familysearch have revamped their site with some users saying that they've been asked to register. Is that what is confusing you?
