12 children to each wife? really? Blimey i'd have said that was really pushing the boundaries of possibility.

Did he produce 36 or did he raise 36? ie step children.

is this him in 1881?

Men can be fertile until old age.

I have ancestors with more than one wife - often wife no. 1 died quite young and wife no. 2 would be a lot younger and still of child-bearing age. If she also died young, then wife no. 3 would probably be in her 20's and able to have more kids etc. etc.

I believe Charlie Chaplin was in his 80's when his youngest child was born. His wife was about 30-ish.

Have traced him in 1881 age 91 and 1871 surname spelt Ewan but no other trace beyond that. Yes his obituory confirmed his many children!

There are a few trees on Ancestry but none give three wives...infact one has children born before the mother :-S

One mentions a wife called Alice...just one child and others just seem to have Margaret Hoban

There is also an 1860 US census attached...but is this the same man??

Thanks for that information. I'm no good doing these messages so didn't realise you could continue on from old tad!

Well I wanted to go further back but like I said can't find him beyond 1871 but may have found his children's baptisms I'm not sure. I've made contact with two of his great granddaughters but was interested if there were any more seeing as he had so many children!
