CupCakes Report 11 Jun 2013 04:07

What I have suddenly realised is that under the Announcements in the right hand column of the Home page there is a box which changes (timed to very slowing rotate) - at the moment is has New Scottish records. It changes to Gene Extra's (for loyalty customers)

This is very misleading because there is no obvious indication that this is changeable.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Jun 2013 04:18

I saw that box earlier, and realised that it did change the topic in it

My objection is two-fold ...............

I NEVER enter via the Home Page ...... I always come straight to Boards Summary, so I would never have seen any of the new things if Gai and others had not directed me there.

and secondly .........................

The whole Loyalty programme is currently a slap in the face to ALL overseas members, who are basically being told that they count for nothing in the eyes of GR

Like it or not, GR have created a 2-tier membership ................. those who can, and those who cannot, join the Loyalty Club and compete for prizes

thus pitting member against member.

a quite incredible thing to happen

Persephone

Persephone Report 11 Jun 2013 07:03

I am really sorry that GR has seen fit to do this.

It discriminates against a lot of members from other parts of the world, who pay for the same services and often provide information to other members re their families in Canada, Australia, South Africa, USA, New Zealand and elsewhere.

I would tend to think it lacks professionalism and do wonder about the legal side of it.

Persephone.

Gee Report 11 Jun 2013 07:18

I'm guessing overseas members are not eligible due to postage & packing restrictions from the companies that are supplying the offers?

If anyone overseas wants any cheap plonk or some Janet & John books, I'll order them for you and post them on ;-)

:-D

Gee

Gee Report 11 Jun 2013 07:22

Alternatively, you might be able to send for the classic and classy Lambrini from Tesco :-0

I believe Tesco also stock books such as 'My First Dictionary' ;-)

Gins ....................

it's the principle of the darned thing

what sort of organization would honestly offer benefits of membership to some members but not others?

the blondes can have this but red heads cannot??

Imagine the outcry if that happened!

it's pure and simple discrimination

either offer the gifts or deals to everyone, or to no-one

Kense

Kense Report 11 Jun 2013 07:44

Sylvia, there aren't any benefits. It is just an exhortation to spend money on things you almost certainly don't need.

GenealogyResearchAssistance Report 11 Jun 2013 07:50

Genes Extra is nothing more than an advertising under the guise of a benefit. I'm not gullible enough to fall for this type of advertising.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Jun 2013 07:59

Ken ................

I agree that I have no desire whatsoever to buy any of the things on offer, or enter the competition for books

But, there are "benefits" in the sense that YOU can make up your own mind as to whether you want these things

WE are denied the chance for that

we are basically being told that we are NOT loyal enough to join the Subscribers Loyalty Club.

As I said above ................. it's the darned principle of the thing!

Persephone

Persephone Report 11 Jun 2013 09:33

Gins you digress it is not about books and wine..

But if it is wine you want to discuss

I should think NZ and Australia would more than likely have better wine than a lot of other places.

Do you want to discuss books Gins.. we do have a vast library in our house 2 - 3 bookshelves of reference books... a massive collection of NZ books... all of our family are well read. That's why we are good at pub quizzes.

Persie ;-) :-|

Elaine Report 11 Jun 2013 10:07

Well said,SinC and P.....it's not that people would WANT the offers, just that they'd like the choice.

Would it not have been easier to give members living abroad the chance to pay p/p if they really wanted something?

Gai

Gai Report 11 Jun 2013 10:10

How I love GR.

On my page I have the Genes Extra on the left hand side and across the banner I can start my family tree for a free 14 day trial on Ancestry.

Why advertise the Genes Extra on .com.au when we can't access it.

:-P

6 issues for £6 is a bargain for us in the UK - but when I decide to subscribe to a magazine I always wait until the free gift is worth having!

Aaaah!
I thought you had solved the problem - it is the same as the Home page - once in very many tries it might appear!

This is the reply I got when I complained about not having Extras': -

Thanks for getting in touch.

Genes Extras is a collection of exclusive offers and competitions for our standard and platinum members living in the UK. It’s our way of saying thank you for subscribing with us.

You’ll see three offers at any one time, with one new offer each month. Our partners are offering great discounts on Family History magazines, days out and more. There’s also a competition each month with some great prizes.

You can view the offers and competition at any time via the box where we advertise which records etc. we have on the right hand side of your homepage. Alternatively, the following link will take you directly to the Genes Extras page:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/extras

We’re only able to offer Genes Extras to UK members at the moment as the partners we work with are UK-based and will only ship discounted products to the UK. We’re sorry about this, but we are looking at ways to reward our overseas members too.

Pers, we really do need a 'tongue in cheek' emoticon...........sigh

If you want some 'real' books, you'll need to look further than NZ :-P

NB: Just for Pers........I do get the 'principle' point being made here, honest, I do!

Goes this way, to bang head on wall>>>>>>>>>>

I looked up this Naked Wines and they are offering for a first purchase at least

Price:£112.88

Less angel discount:£62.89

Less your voucher:£20.00

You pay:£29.99

sounds better than the GR offer to me, if I was a drinker that is

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Jun 2013 19:45

that sounds like a VERY good deal!

what's the wine like????????????

and where is it from?

do you think they would ship to Canada?

but I'm only interested if it is GOOD wine

not that I drink ........................... I'd give it away as presents to friends :-D
