Stephen Report 10 Jul 2013 16:12

Hi all,
first time on this board, but been doing genes for years.
Have any of you have come across a relative's name that differs year to year?
The example I have is my wife's great grandmother.
Up till now I have had 6 variants!
Her names are
Birth reg Edekiah Davies
Married reg Eddeykiah
Death reg Etikiah
1871 census Edecia
1881 census Lydia
1911 census Eketiah.
It taken me ages to find her and then her parents who are both Welsh, and the fun is now trying to work out where they were born.
The 1871 census says birthplace is-
Hanegnelfach Carmarthenshire. Could this be Llanegnelfach? or Llangyfelfach?
Ah well, more hunting around!

Welcome to the boards Stephen

Yes...remember most were illiterate back then so the enumerator spelt the names as they thought right

Cheers Jax,

Mind you it does cause a lot of confusion, even her surname varies!
as for the Welsh pronounciations :-S

You also have to consider if the info you are looking at is transcribed? human error, a check of the original image often highlights this problem

EDIT Archibald here says a boarder, but I think an error was made as the ages have been altered...

If Jane and Thomas married between 1851 and 61 there are several possibles, child's birch cert will confirm

Thanks for your replies, esp Rambling Rose for 1861 /1891and the locations in Wales.
I had seen 1871 census the other day and then chased up the 1881.

My late mother-in -law and her late sister remember her as Etekiah.
They both couldn't remember Etekiah's siblings though.
Once again thanks all.

My guess as to where they were born (in OP) would be Llanegnelfach. My OH has ancestors born in Lloc, Flintshire, who moved to England, and all subsequent documents have them born in Hock.

It's a bit of a guess that this is Thomas in 1851, he is an 'iron miner' , I think it matches in with the Llanfihangel , though a different spelling, on the 1861
