thanks for all your advice. Yes that is my John Griffin and I had noticed that by 1911 he had died although I cannot find a record of it in the Middlesbrough area. I have all the information from the census mentioned so guess my next step is to purchase the marriage certificate for John Griffin and Rachel Howe and hopefully find enough information on there. thanks again for all the help, this family research is quite addictive!

Oh dear, John's died by 1911. Thought there might be some clue on this.

to help us get our heads round your family, is this YOUR John Griffin in 1891?????

John Griffin 37 General Labourer
Rachael Griffin 30 b.ca 1861, Middlesboro, Yorkshire
John Griffin 8 b.ca 1883, Workington, Cumberland
Bernard Griffin 6 b.ca 1885, Workington

From this, we can see that he and Rachael must have married in either Yorkshire or Cumberland. Buying their marriage certificate should give you the names fo their fathers ....... and that might help to trace John's family. Just as DET said.

Welcome to the boards Susan.

Did he marry in England? If so, the marriage certificate would give his father's name if known, and possibly the father's occupation. That might help to eliminate some of the Irish families

hi, I'm a relative rookie at this and looking for some help please.
I've traced John Griffin from Cockermouth to Middlesbrough via the 1891 and 1901census. however on the 1891 census he is listed as simply being from Ireland with no further details. I've checked the Irish sites recommended in a previous thread but with no further information I have found many matches and cannot narrow it down. Any one have any other ideas please?
