It would registered In the registation district of the place of death.

For instance my grandfather died in a hospital in Hertfordshire in 1939 . His usual home address was S E London but his death is reg in Hertfordshire .

He had been transferred to the hospital for specialist treatment from London

Normally a death is registered where it took place.
My uncle & aunt lived in Shirley, outside Birmingham, but they both died in Redditch hospital & that´s where the deaths are registered.
I nearly dismissed them when I was looking on the indexes, Then the penny dropped.

Thank you both for your imput.

What made me ask was a burial on the deceasedonline website for a George Povey buried 27 June 1888 at Greenwich. The only George Povey on the Death Index for 1888 is shown in Staffordshire.

I was looking for a Grace Povey burial who died 1888 Greenwich and wondered if the George should have been Grace.

He could have been buried in a different place to where he died. The death register records where somebody died; not where they were buried.

It may be the cemetery where she is buried hasn't been transcribed yet

The parks and cemeteries dept of Greenwich council keep very good records of the municipal cemeteries ,they will do a search for you if you give them the details from the death cert. they do now make a charge for a search

My g/grandfather was visiting his daugther in Surrey, he normally lived in W. London.

His death was registered by his other daughter who he lived with in London, but he is buried in Surrey.
