PM received.

Thank you so much for finding my g/g/grandmother Sarah. I had searched for some time for her never knowing if she had died in childbirth, married or even where she came from. I could not find her or Joseph in the 1871 census so it became a mystery to me.
Now I know she had married Joseph's father and amazing that Joseph carried the Hazelgrave name in the census records so no wonder I couldn't find Joseph White.

Mary has Welbury White, born 1887 Leeds & Isabella Cross (1865) on her GR tree - so it looks like Astra/Kath have found the correct family.

Sarah's mother?

Frances Wrigley
Birth Date:30 Apr 1806
Event Date:Sep 1806
Event Type:Baptism
Parish:Leeds, St Peter
Father's Name:Joseph Wrigley

There are a couple of christenings for Joseph White, so not sure which (if either) is correct. 1807, father joseph or 1808 father John

Sarah's christening:

Sarah White
Parish:Leeds, St Peter
Baptism Date:7 Mar 1848
Father's Name:Joseph White
Mother's name:Frances White

christened same day were Elizabeth & George, abode Cottage street.

Earlier christenings William b 23/5/25, Ann b 13/2/28 - both christened 3/3/28. Then Joseph b 3/6/30, Jane 21/9/33 and James (no dob) ch 4/12/36.

All with same parents - Joseph was a flax dresser.

If the family posted in 1851/61 are correct, this could be her parents marriage - Thomas - (sorry, this should read Joseph!) is a flax dresser:

Joseph White
Marriage or Bann Date:4 Dec 1824
Parish:Leeds, St Peter
Spouse's Name:Frances Wrigley

This christening is a bit strange, looks like the vicar was saving writing - I'm pretty sure it says "sons of"

Joseph Christopher Welbury Hezelgrave
Parish:Leeds, All Saints
Baptism Date:18 Apr 1867
Father's Name:Thomas Hezelgrave (Miner)
Mother's name:Sarah Hezelgrave

Christopher (1864) and Wellbury (1867) were not registered with any other names, so think they christened all 3 on same day - inclucluding Joseph, but the vicar was being lazy!

Sarah gives her birthplace as Leeds in 1844. On her marriage to Thomas her father is named as Joseph White. I can't make out his occupation. >>>>Dresser?
His father is Christopher.

Hi Mary and welcome to the community boards.

This may be his birth registration. As it was in his mother's maiden name it is very unlikely that it will name his father. But you never know.

Births Jun 1862 (>99%)
WHITE Joseph Leeds 9b 348

If he is the Joseph White who married Isabella Cross in 1883 his father is named as Thomas Hazlegrave? on his marriage certificate but is then crossed out and Born out of Wedlock added.

However there is a marriage in 1863 but whether Thomas is his real father or not we may never know.

Marriages Sep 1863 (>99%)
BACON Elizabeth Leeds 9b 370
>>>Hesselgrave Thomas Leeds 9b 370
Hill John Leeds 9b 370
>>>>WHITE Sarah Leeds 9b 370

Have you got them on the 1871 census, and, if so, could you post it on here, please?

Thank-you

Mary Report 16 Apr 2014 03:55

I am searching for a Sarah White who lived in Leeds about 1862. My great grandfather Joseph White was born in Leeds in 1862 born illegitimate and his mother was Sarah White. On Joseph's marriage certificate it gave the name of his father but was illegible. I haven't been able to find any info on Sarah.
Any help would be appreciated
Mary
