Hi all, I'm looking to find the family of Henry Edwards, his father was Arthur but I do not have his Mothers name. I found him at the age of 8 living with his auntie and uncle living in Liverpool. I'm really struggling to find his parents or siblings so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Denise

just fiddling around trying to get information

eg, what was Mary Lee's maiden name? Could that lead us to Henry's possible parents?

Henry is staying with James and Elizabeth Lee in 1891

That James is probably the son of Mary Lee, shown in the 1881 Census

This looks like James marriage ...............

England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973 about James Lee

Name: James Lee

he says his father was called John Lee

another very common name :-(

Thank you all so very much :-)
Henry's father Arthur was a joiner he was already deceased when Henry married Mary Alice Ashcroft in 1896. I now need to research the Lee family to see if I can find Henry's mothers maiden name. Thank you all again x

Denise Report 15 Aug 2014 08:19

Sorry Gwyn, I meant to say that Henry's father was listed on Henry & Mary Alice's marriage license as deceased and had been a joiner. The two witnesses on the license were related to Mary Alice, her half sister Esther Wilson and Esther's future husband Archibald Flemming.
Henry and Mary Alice are buried with my grandparents, their daughter Elizabeth Phillips and son in law Sidney Phillips in a cemetery in Liverpool. Didn't have a lot to go on, just snippets my Mum told me many years ago when I was small, as there are no surviving relatives of my Mums family now, I have no one to ask.
Thanks again.

So we need to find Arthur, - a joiner ( or similar) in 1871 and follow him......................

Nothing obvious yet.

Unfortunately ........................ father shown as deceased on a marriage certificate can mean no father exists

it was a common thing for illegitimate children to put "a' name for their father on their marriage certificate, and say he was deceased.

It hid the fact that they were illegitimate from the in-laws.

In any case, the presence of a father's name on any marriage certificate is not proof that there was a father ....................... no documents had to be shown to the vicar.

Yes I agree with Pat ,,,,, think the only chance of finding him is through the Lee family, that is if he was a real nephew.

I haven't had any luck finding the family though.

Flip .......

I haven't had any luck finding the Lee family before that 1881 Census ..... at least not together so that I can be sure that I have them!

Flip

Flip Report 16 Aug 2014 07:19

It's pretty hopeless, the 1881 census show the Lees born Liverpool yet the 1891 shows James born Bolton - so we don't even know where they were actually from.

I think this is James in 1911, married 22 years 9 children 2 have died:

James Lee
Age in 1911:47
Estimated birth year:abt 1864
Relation to Head:Head
Gender:Male
Birth Place:Farnworth, Bolton, Lancashire, England
Civil Parish:Seaforth
County/Island:Lancashire
Country:England
Street address:17 Alder St Lime Grove Seaforth
Marital Status:Married
Occupation:Dock Labourer
Registration district:West Derby
Registration District Number:455
Sub-registration district:Crosby
ED, institution, or vessel:1
Piece:22300
Household Members:
NameAge
James Lee 47
Elizabeth Lee 43
William Lee 21
Ethel Lee 19
Alfred Lee 17
Ernest Lee 14
Elizabeth Lee 12
Albert Lee 8
George Lee 2

Plus some boarders. So it looks like they may have been from the Bolton area.
