Hi, my great grandad William Ellwood was from Shap in Westmoreland, born 1855 i think. Is there anyone who may have more info on the Westmoreland Ellwoods?

Welcome to the boards John.
If you are looking for relatives, you need to check other members' trees for matches - use the search button above.
Otherwise, plenty of members here are willing to help, but you need to let us know what info you already have and what you are hoping to find out.
Just a point - there are 2 William Ellwoods on the 1861 census who match your info, so you would need to have a few more facts to make sure you have the right one.

Cheers Brummiejan, all i have to go on is he was a poor hay cutter, with his scythe as only belonging. He married my great granny Elizabeth Harrison (born 1860)from Stanhope around 1880. He died 29 April 1915

Wow, thanks safc, this is almost correct with Elizabeth (born 1860) and daughter Isabellas dates and birth places, but i didnt know about Ann
Strange that William is listed as 1856 though, and not 1855. I suppose though its a good idea to have + or - a year or two difference

Using the local index search at http://gro.durham.gov.uk/ confirms patchems guess on pairing spouses.

Marriage certificate for:
Name: ELLWOOD, William
Year: 1878
Other index entries for this marriage:
HARRISON, Elizabeth
[from the postal application:
Register No. - Entry No. - District
R005/9 entry 57 ]
This looks like the registrar's own register, so either a rego office marr or a non-conformist marr where the church was not (pre-1898) authorized to keep an official marr rego.
