While many people assume that all Irish records have been lost or destroyed, that is just not the case. From the point of view of genealogy, the most significant losses from the 1922 Ireland Public Record Office fire were the 19th-century census returns, the Church of Ireland parish registers, and the testamentary collections. Other records not maintained in the PRO have survived, however, including civil records of births, marriages, and deaths, non Church of Ireland parish records, property records, and later censuses.

Even for much of the material that was lost, there are abstracts, transcripts, and fragments of the originals.

Civil registration of BMDs began in Ireland 1865 - actually, it began abt 20y earlier for some marrs - I don't think I ever knew precisely what "some" meant - it included C of I marrs, and excluded RC marrs, but I don't know abt other protestant marrs, and jewish, etc. marrs.

One can purchase certs (or cheaper still, the uncertified images of the rego) via:

The price for the uncertified images is cheaper with the census ref.

Incidentally, except for some legal purposes - like getting a passport for yourself or your kids, when an actual cert makes life much, much easier - an uncertified image is perfectly adequate. I don't know precisely what Ireland does, but the English GRO just sticks the image onto the cert, then certifies it saying:
"Certified to be a true copy of an entry in the certified copy of a register held in the district above mentioned". (Note, the GRO doesn't have the original rego for most BMDs - they're held locally, and a copy was made locally at the end of every quarter for the GRO.)

Just for completeness, the GRONI issues certs for N.I. It can do this for NI pre-partition, as Dublin made a copy for them of all their pre-partition regos for the 6 counties. So one can buy pre-partition BMDs for NI in both Irelands, but just thru NI post-partition.
