Horrace

Horrace Report 16 Mar 2016 15:32

My wife's mother's maiden name was Tushingham, and she often remarked to my wife about her relative, Zelma Shone, nee Owen. Both these families were publicans, George Tushingham being the licensee of The New Inn, in Newtown, Chester, and Horace Owen licensee of The Angel Hotel in Brook Street, Chester. Zelma P. Owen was born in 1921 to a lady: maiden name Tushingham. I am attempting to ascertain the link at this stage, and would appreciate a pointer or two in this quest.

My interest has been aroused by a superb article in the 'Cheshire Ancestor' by a member of the Family History Society of Cheshire, Mr Chester Guttridge.

My late mother-in -law was Fridiswid M. Tushingham, who was orphaned in her early teens, and went to live-in and work for her grandfather George Tushingham at the New Inn, where she stayed until she married.

Chester Guttridge mentions John Tushingham, who had previously been married to Elizabeth Shone; who had herself been previously been married to a Faulkner.
The story Mr Guttridge tells is of a series of difficult circumstances, the main character of which is Ann, who married three times, and who had come into conflict with the law on several occasions throughout her life. Her maiden name was Williamson, and lived with her parents at The White Swan in Milton Street Chester. Her final marriage was to a John Tushingham, 47, born 1838, and a labourer, in November 1885. Her second marriage was to Benjamin Phillip Owen. So the Owen name comes up again! He was made bankrupt after neglecting his business in 1882.
