Mad Alice Report 2 Dec 2016 09:59

It might be worth investigating the possible cox relatives in Judd Street.
Mary Ann's father was James ( Hitchcock ) a blacksmith from Thetford Norfolk.
For some reason he called himself Cox when he married her mother, but just after Mary Ann was born he married again ( bigamously ) and left the family for a new wife Jane with whom he had a new family. He was tried at the old Bailey and found guilty

I wonder if maybe James Allison left the family in a similar way … I have no evidence apart from the twinkle in my dad's eye and his saying Sailors have 'a girl in every port'
He was in the Navy himself !
But No facts .. so Im still searching that elusive death !…

Thank you for all your help once again .

My goodness ! I haven't asked for help on here for a while ad I had forgotten how much help is available!
Most of the information confirms what i have and lots of new questions too.
I had thought maybe James was from scotland. One possible census record for 1891 has him at sea and from scotland. My dad said he was scottish but other relatives didn't think so so maybe he is the Yorkshire born James.
Never realised Ernest was in the workhouse and it looks like maybe his fathers death sparked this.
it seems this family survived some very hard times!

Hi yes she did marry again following the death of her first husband who remains a solid brick wall .i don't know where he was born, can't find him on a census and have no death date or place for him. Obviously there was something happening in this family .. Maybe consumption? . I now I see a couple of possible records for james senior on deceased online although my dad thought he was ' lost at sea' . I will have to join the site and look into the records further .
My Dad remembered 'Nanny Cardwell' and some of the children I think Robin in particular.
It was a hard life ... I keep having 'who do you think you are ?' Moments !
Thank you once again
Linda

Oh how sad! Two children dying within a month.
Just as well she had another child very close to that date.
I guess their deaths might well be related to povertyor poor living conditions.
Thank you for taking the time to find these for me.

Mad Alice Report 1 Dec 2016 01:21

I am trying to find out what happened to James Allison born in 1883 to James Allison and Mary Ann Allison.
He was christened in Regents Square and had a brother William Ernest who died and brother Edward Ernest who was my Grandfather.
I cannot find his death ( most likely soon after his birth I am guessing) No one in the family mentioned the brothers to my father and he always thought Ernest was an only child.
Can anyone help?
The family lived in Judd Street.
Thank you,
Linda
