Please can any one tell me how accurate a death cert is

I have received Emily Riley's death cert but the place and DOB do not match with the info I have which do you think is the correct one ?

Death cert 15th Dec 1900 Lincoln
1901 1911 Census Retford
1939 Reg 29th Nov 1899

The informant on death cert was the coroner Do you think he got it wrong ?

Thank you Christine

A death certificate is only as accurate as the informant knows- mistakes can and do happen.

For Ref- is this the Emily you are following (daughter of Edward Riley and Hannah Ebb)?

Yes that is the right family
I am still waiting for the birth cert to come
On the death cert she is just Emily (no Annie) Riley a retired weaver of 39 Spencer Street Burnley
Cause of death Road Accident (I know she died after a bus accident) there was an Inquest held on 27th March 1973
Is there any where I would find info about this?

Its just the date & place of birth on the 1939 Register and Death Cert not matching will have to wait for birth cert to come
Thankyou for your help.

As Clarence pre-deceased her in 1970 (same address according to his probate) & I think Florence died in 1967, then there would be no close family left to provide the coroner with the details of her birth - possibly a friend guessed?

Lottiesgran

Lottiesgran Report 1 Jan 2017 14:43

Thanks Flip for that info
She had a sister in law and nieces and nephews in Lincoln who she visited, she was my father in laws Aunt (sister of his late father Albert Edward Riley)
She was at my wedding in 1969

Birth cert arrived today DOB 29th Nov 1899 so death cert and Probate record have the wrong date. Thankyou all for your help
Christine.

Well, when you think about it could you remember the dob of your sister in law or even your aunt - I know I couldn't! Hardly surprising the death record doesn't match - and this is also needed to get probate.

The only things on a death certificate that you can be certain are accurate are .........

date and place of death
cause of death
name of informant/coroner

Literally everything else is only what the informant knows or has been told by the deceased. No birth or marriage certificates have to be shown.

People tell lies about their age or name (!!) even to close family let alone to casual friends.
