If Mary Jackson was your grandmother I don't think her husband would be your father-in-law, unless your family is very complicated ;-) ;-) ;-)

This looks to be her death:-

First name(s) Mary Evelyn
Last name King
Gender Female
Birth day 26
Birth month 12
Birth year 1919
Age -
Death quarter 2
Death year 1996
District Burnley & Pendle
District number 5822A
Register number A15C
Entry number 235
Date of registration mm/yy 0596
County Lancashire
Country England
Record set England & Wales Deaths 1837-2007

Would whoever registered the death have known her place of birth? That could be a starting point, but unfortunately I think it very unlikely you'll be able to find her parents Even if an adoption is a formal adoption (which hers won't be because it is too early) only the adoptee can access the records.

Do you know your grandparent's birth name?

If so, look the birth up on the GRO site, which will give the mother's maiden name.

However, if the mother was unmarried, the birth will probably have been registerd under her surname, and you are unlikely ever to know who the father was.
