I am looking at Nottinghamshire
Hucknall Torkard ALL District 4 page 17 for Samuel Jackson.

It looks like Cow Sto Maker

This is not the only entry for this occupation but I cannot work out what it is.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Regards

I don'tthink it is Cow but not sure what, possibly cork

I does look as though everyone was doing the same work so look into the history of Hucknall Torkard and see what was going on then.

I think it is Cotton ? Maker.

Cotton is shortened to Cott /n.

EDIT. I think it may be Cotton Hose Maker (as in stockings) In the next census the younger Samuel is a Frame Work Knitter which would tie in with this.

Thanks for the reply

I cannot find anything online that is why I posted this.

Not sure if there would be so many workers working in Cork on the outskirts of Nottingham though? Being Lace making and farming area.

Many thanks Kath

That makes complete sense.
As when the son left home he became a Frame Work Knitter as did most of his family once he was married.

Extremely Grateful

You're welcome. There are also other people in adjoining images doing the same job and also some described as Cotton Ho(Hose) seamers. Presumably they finished off the garments.

Well done KB - better eyes than me. Having looked up the place the cotton hose maker makes sense.

Don't think my eyes are better than anyone's names. Just used to the way the enumerators shortened things in those days. It would make it easier for all of us if they wrote words out fully.

Looking at the images again I think the abbreviation IS Cotton Sto Maker which is Cotton Stocking Maker.
