Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 20 Jun 2007 04:50

Greeting’s Again. …… Paula You asked the following :~ “Are there any on line links to street maps back in the early 1900's for Leicester?” The one I use is called old-maps It can be a bit difficult to work but it soon becomes easier If you type that into goggle Old maps .......& click on the UK button. Next Window. Click on the link to old- maps Next Window This Is the home page for the site ( You can save a link to it to your favorites ) 1/2 way down click on the green wording “ to start your search “ Next Window Click your mouse on the “ Search Box” ( top left ) Type in the location you require Then click “ GO” Next Window. The results will appear in the Pink Box Click on the scroll bar of this box Choices are displayed in a drop down menu. Click on the one you want States loading……….. Next Window. Will be the image you require Click on the white arrows on the edges of map to navigate left, right, Up,& Down. The scale settings are on your left. It does sound a bit daunting to start with but it gets better each time you use it If you scroll down a bit there usually three maps of different years Just click on the one you want & it will load up. MIKE.

Yes, I went to Guthlaxton!! I left there in 1985. Howkins doesn't ring a bell though. What years did he go there? Did you go there too? Did he go to South Wigston, Bushloe or Abington first? Paula

Ha, ha Mike!! No link to Ford Motor Company as far as I'm aware of!!! There was a story of one of my Ford ancestors having a bridge in Pompei named after him, but I've yet to find proof of it!!! Actually my Ford search has become very confusing to me as there was no creativity in naming children in those days~ they were all George!!!!! (mental note to self~ No More George's!!!) Are there any online links to street maps back in the early 1900's for Leicester? Paula

Hi Mike and all the regulars! I have seen this link before but have never posted. I am an ex-pat' of Leicester, Wigston to be precise. I grew up there in the 70's and 80's, then in the early 90's served some drinking time in Crete where I met my American hubby! California is where we live now. I am somewhat of a novice in genealogy as I never get much time to spend researching, I have been a member of GR for a couple of years though. With the introduction out of the way, the names on my family tree in England are Ford, Thorpe, Collins, Timson, Bardell, & Follows. (so far!!!) I hope to add more soon!!! (don't we all?) Paula

Greeting’s Again Sheila. Yes funny you should ask that about absent voters I had a similar request only last week from an other site. If you can leave it with me I can but ask at the Records Office this week & see what develops Then get back to you The biggest hurdle to overcome is to find out in which Ward Bruin Street came under. Was Edwin b 1885. the Son of Edwin & Emily ? Father & Son Iron Molders Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles ) Had two regiments..... 26th. & 90th. Which one was Edwin enlisted in ? If Edwin married whist in the army then his service number rank & Reg. would be on the marriage certifcate.... Yes…….. They got to Twickenham. ………. But they did not get off the Bus !!!!!! :0((((( MIKE. xxx

Sheila Report 18 Jun 2007 15:28

Mike Do you know anything about the absent voters list for 1918? Is it in the records office? I'm told this may be a way of finding a service number and unit for my grandfather. I have photos of him in the uniform of the Cameronians but he does not appear on the medal cards for them and I'm wondering if later on he was transferred. His name was EDWIN PHILLIPS and his wife EMMA EDITH PHILLIPS would have been living in Bruin Street at the time. As always, would appreciate your learned advice. Sheila PS We went all the way to Twickenham...and we lost. Never mind, roll on next season.

Paul, Have had a look at your names again as it's been a while. I have Wards that are from Newark originally and one daughter married a Reuben Wand. Reuben and Mary can be found in Newark for a number of years but they married at St Mary's in Radford which is just out of the city centre, Elaine PS Many of the Wands were butchers by trade
