Would it be possible to look up a Samuel Spray b1796 Beeston, Notts - I have traced him with his wife ANN ? on the census - but I cant find their marriage and her maiden name. ___________________________________________________ I have a Samuel SPRAY born 30/11/1794 and baptised 7/12/1794 in Beeston. Father is Samuel and mother is Ann. The nearest marriage I get is Samuel SPREA with Ann PEPPER on 15/12/1819 at Lowdham. As I cannot see a baptism for a Samuel Sprea, this could well be a transcription error. Hope this helps.

Thanks Charles - I will start saving up - they certainly look useful. I would think they would help me with several of my lines - many come from Nottinghamshire. Thanks again for the help this evening.

Elisabeth The Parish records are available on CD from the Nottinghamshire FHS (nottsfhs dot org). I bought them as I have three different branches of my family who are from Notts. They also come with software which makes lookups very easy. Personally, I think it was a good investment.

Charles, Thank you - the Mary Ann is a direct blood relative of my husband, but the other branch appear on the edge of my own maternal tree. I only discovered them because my maternal ggmother's death certificate shows Sneinton Boulevard,Nottingham in 1917, at the home of a John Horspool, a descendant of Samuel. I could not understand why she was there when she had lived all her life in the Lincolnshire Fens. I discovered John had married a distant aunt. Strange how names can appear from many different directions. Is this a disc you are working from - maybe I could buy one? Elisabeth

Just so you know, there are Horspools on the register back to 1605!

Thank you so much for the speedy reply! I just peeked again now, as I wait for the veg to cook. All those names and dates will give me so much to work on later this evening, if I can get my hands on the keyboard. I am very grateful! Elisabeth

'would be grateful for any information on the Hors(e)pool family. I believe Samuel Horspool was born c1829 Nottingham also Mary Ann Horspool who married Thomas Marston in Nottingham or Bingham around 1850, but I don't know where or when she was born. Any information on this family name would be useful and may prove a connection between both sides of my tree.' Elizabeth .... I have found a ton of Horspools with various spellings. Specifically ..... Samuel HORSEPOOL, baptised 27/7/28 at Nottingham St. Mary. Father WILLIAM and mother SARAH. Father's profession: FWK (framework knitter). Abode: Barker Gate. Mary Ann HORSEPOOL, baptised 22/7/1827 at Bingham. Father JAMES and mother Hannah. Father's profession: Butcher. No abode listed. Thomas MARSTON married to Mary Ann HORSEPOOL on 19/4/1847 at Bingham. A couple more lookups ............. William HORSPOOL married Sarah MOTTRAM on 7/1/1817 at Nottingham St. Mary. There are a number of possible children: Rowland - 1817 William - 1819 John - 1821 Harriet - 1826 Samuel - 1828 James - 1830 Thomas - 1832 Charles - 1834 Sarah - 1837 All dates are approximate and for baptism not birth. There are two possible marriages for a James Horspool/Horsepoole in Bingham. The first with Hannah CHETTLE on 12/9/1803 and the second with Hannah HARRIS on 12/6/1821. I can find a number of siblings for Mary Ann (it is the profession of 'butcher' that is the clue) William - 1821 Ellen - 1824 Mary Ann - 1827 James Harris - 1830 Hannah - 1832 Vince - 1834 Elizabeth Harris - 1836 Vincent - 1837 I think the middle name of James and Elzabeth is the clue to which is the right marraiage. Again dates are baptismal.
