OC I have a free tree on TP. I just tried the 'Search all of Tribal Pages' facility and it didn't work. Do you have to have a paid for site for this to work? Lynne

I lost my tree from ftm when the motherboard blew up on our computer recently and tribal pages saved the day. I was able to export a gedcom from there including all the notes and open it in ftm. I have also exported my tree from tribal pages to family tree forum without any problem. I have several people on my genes trees here entered twice because of cousin marriages and two sisters marrying two brothers. Anne

Giz Gizmo No, you don't have to be a paid subscriber - go to your Homepage tab and you should find instructions there to search the site. And - if you click on your names tab, you will get a box on the right hand side of the page, which shows if your names appear on any other trees on the site. OC

I bet if you did that here, you'd get hot matches for that Amy.

Clive Ah, I have developed a strategy, so that I don't get bogged down in sources and citations! My fist source citation reads 'I have the certificate'. This reminds me I have it, and also lets any viewer know that I have hard evidence My other sources might read 'From original, filmed copy of Parish register for blah blah, page numdber blah blah' Also 'I have the Will'. I tend to put the details either with the person concerned (in the notes), but for one particular Will, which names 37 people, I have turned the Will into a 'person' (called Amy Green Will 1817) and copied the details in full on that, and refer all the named individuals to that source. Probably not very correct, but it is working so far. (And yes, I see the little book thingy, now you mention it!) OC

I am one dippy bird when it comes to following written instructions, BUT, the Tribal site is great, it does exactly what it says on the screen. Kathlyn

I paid the £16 pounds for premium membership on TP, that's how pleased I am with it. In this sites defence I will say I find Genes is much better for contacting relatives and finding links, even if hot matches are a bit hit and miss to say the least, the boards are also great (not as good as they once were..but we all know why that is). So I wont be rushing to leave. But has to be said TP is far better in every other way. Better layout, far easier to input info, and you can easily share your tree with family, unlike here where they would have to pay and join for that privilage. One thing I could never do here was enter relatives without a birth date, or link cousin marraiges etc. It's easy as pie on TP, so now I just eneter all my info into TP, download the gedcom and import it here every month or so. Has made life unimaginably easier!

Thanks for that tip Elaine - I am off to do it now! And thinking of starting a THIRD tree on TP, pmsl, - I would like to keep my mother's tree separate from my father's tree, as the only connection between the two sides is my parent's marriage - if that makes sense. By the way - does anyone know what has happened to the Sources and Citations bit which popped up every time you made an entry? It seems to have disappeared from the individuals input page - it appeared at the bottom, but has gone, although the Sources and Citations bit can still be accessed from the list so named. It was really handy and I was working my way through, putting all my sources in PROPERLY, lol. OC

How to get google matches with your tree - There are 2 things you can do which should help solve this problem. Firstly you need to register the web address and you can do this by going to http://www.google(.)com/addurl.html - just enter the location (URL) of your User Home Page. Secondly you should register your site with Cyndis List – go to - http://www.cyndislist(.)com/submitnewlink.htm Here you will need to enter a few details about your tree. Within a few days you will receive an email from Cydnis List saying that your site has been added to the “What´s new on Cyndi´s List” section. About a week or 10 days later you will find that if you start googling the names that are included on your tree, your website will appear as a potential match. When googling names I would suggest you either put the name in inverted commas, or use the plus sign in your search criteria, for example “John Smith” family tree or John +Smith +family tree There may of course be other ways you can get your website recognized but this has certainly worked for me

The funny thing is, I have only ever had two real matches on GR in over three years. But on TP, I have matches in five trees. I built mine from scratch on TP, partly because my genes tree is in such an utter mess, and partly as a sort of 'reminder' exercise to myself - I find I forget parts of my tree very quickly. As I entered people, I made a checklist of things I still needed to find. And, I also made two connections in my own tree that I had missed before, cousins marrying cousins - TP squeaks politely to tell you you have already entered that person. And - you can put floating branches on too, while you check out any connections. I find this very useful as it means I have those people to hand, instead of on a bit of paper to get buried in a pile of other bits of paper. My elderly Uncle, who does not have a computer, finds the TP tree wonderful - he looks at it on his son's computer, and his granddaughter recently extracted some information to take with her on a school trip to the War Cemetery. She returned with a photo of the grave of a relative, and put it straight on the tree. No messing about emailing each other, me trying to send files etc. But the sheer beauty of it for me is that it WORKS, I do not have to GUESS how to do something and I do not have to wait 25 minutes for information to appear. I do have a feeling that TP won't be free for much longer, as the numbers swell, so hurry up! OC

Clive, count your self lucky that you have any matches on TP, I have zero and less than 10 on here (that includes, my aunt and 2 second cousins that I speek to and another 2 second cousins that I've never met.) and I have a bigger tree on TP than here. Current TP fees are £11 and £17 a year but are variable because they are converted from US $ ($19 and $29) You can uplead replacement trees on to a free TP site but you lose all preious info as you can't export it first.
