Donna Report 27 Jul 2006 18:06

Hello I'm going to apologise in advance for being very cheeky but I wondered if you might possibly manage a Service Record look up for me (or whatever it is that tells me where he served & when) as, much as I'd love to get to Kew, family commitments mean I'm not going to get there in a month of sundays. My GGrandfather was Corporal James Grant, WR318406, Royal Engineers, he also has an earlier number, 293752. The roll no reads:- RE/104 B19 4798 If you are able to I have the medal card to avoid any confusion. I appreciate that you are going there for your own research and if you are unable to fit this in then that's fine but any help or additional info would be very gratefully received as I've literally just been given his medals and a postcard sent to him whilst he served in France, which he then brought home. Thanks for taking the time to read this. All the best Donna x p.s sorry didn't mean for this message to be quite so long....she says blushing with embarassment!

My laptop has gone to computer hospital, so I have limited access to GR. Currently office hours only. I am not likely to get full access before next Friday at the earliest. This means that I will find it difficult to contact all of you, particularly if you have last minute problems. I will work on the basis that those who can come on 5th August will be there by 9.30. If you can't, please let me know on this thread.

Hi, I don't I'm afraid. The file numbers have come from a very helpful reply to an email I sent to Chelsea Pensioners Hospital. If they appear to be a long search Do not worry, I will have to kerb my impatience and wait till I can go myself. I thought maybe if they were alphabetical or by year it would not take too long. I am off to bed myself in a minute so will check back tomorrow. It may not be until late evening though. Thankyou for your reply.

Hi Perrenmaid I'm on the verge of going to bed, otherwise I'd check the research guides out tonight, but it looks as if your search might take a very long time if you don't know either discharge date or regiment. Browsing W0 23, this is a whole class, and it looks as if it might be a minimum of ten records to be checked and I can't tell whether they are completely indexed. Do you have any other information to narrow the search?

Thanks to Glen for the nudge on this thread. Further to my own entry can I please be very cheeky??? as I stand no chance of getting near Kew till the New year. Whilst there could somebody please have a look at the following for me. WO23 and/or WO116. The first covers long service army pensions 1702 to 1933 the other disablement pensions 1715 to 1913. I am looking to find the Regiment and discharge date of Henry Clifton born about 1803 Kensworth Herts. Shown as a Pensioner Her Majestys Army on the 1881 census aged 78. Apparently this info will allow me to then track his army service. Thankyou in anticipation.

HI Is Kew where the adoption records are held? If so, would anyone mind a newcomer tagging along.

Joy

Yes, trouble is that the 19th has a meet in Poole. Oh, decisions, decisions. Like my new name ?!

Phoenix

Phoenix Report 13 Jul 2006 09:23

Joy There will be a second trip on 19th if you can't make the 5th. And if the journey is complicated, so you can't make Kew by 9.30 , that's fine, so long as you let me know when you reckon to arrive I can be on the lookout for you. Rod Glad you can make it.

Sorry to take such a long time to return to this thread. Work and family commitments getting in the way of serious GR time! Deb and Lyla, it'll be lovely to meet both of you. Sylvia and Sharon, glad you can both make the 5th Lynn and Mary, it has only been since I've joined these boards that I've appreciated how very lucky I am to live relatively close to Kew and all the other London repositories.

I'm still coming Brenda. Collecting a host of things I want to look at but will have to cut the list down. Can I ask a question you might know? I know there are lots of ships logs and lists there. What about training ships? Would the logs be at Kew or elsewhere? *Best wishes* Sharon
