Sue in Somerset

Sue in Somerset Report 13 Apr 2006 00:33

I've got one chap from Spain I don't fancy much. He was called Alfonzo Fernandez IX otherwise known as 'The Slobberer'. Despite being royal he doesn't sound very pleasant. Sue

I've found a few more of husband's London lot on the census today. As well as the paper stainers, he also has a paper marbler (ooh! eat your heart out, Laurence llewelyn-Bowen), many of the unmarried women are fancy box makers, and I've also found a PLAIN BOX MAKER! Don't know what they were putting in all these boxes, fancy or otherwise! nell

Glen, the best larger in the world - probably , brewed in the UK by Northamptonians! ...and the small shoe companies are not odd! They are world famous!! And to all of you that doubt it, Northamptonshire IS the home of shoemaking! Great boot and shoe museum in the town centre, been there - its good. ...and what is the nickname of Northampton town Football club?? **anywhere having a pub called the St Crispin will probably have association with shoemaking too - he was the patron saint

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 12 Apr 2006 22:33

Well as an ex shoe shifting truck driver,i can say Northampton is now populated by Italian made shoes, and the odd very small shoe company, all using Italian hides. As for my lot well how many ag labs for a sapper, and then a merchants clerk,Railway Station Master,Coldstream Guard and my final offering Farmer (250 acres of Norfolk) employing ten men and two boys plus 3 household servants. Oh forgot my Master Mariner,he must be worth a bit. Glen

Oh dear, are you quite sure about the dog poo? My cordwainer made boots for the Gentry on the Isle of Man, cant imagine him messing about with dog poo. I have also just found a dish turner but want to hang on to him for a bit, till I find out what sort of dishes he was turning, and why, in 1714, in the middle of God's last acre. And, ahem, I was too modest to mention this before, but (preen, preen) I DO have four Baronets and a Knight Baronet, but am keeping them too, just wanted to wave them in your faces. Olde Crone

I've got a murderess--except she's not really mine-she's my uncle by marriages g gran! does that count? I've also got several hundred miners!!

Janet

Janet Report 12 Apr 2006 20:19

My cordwainers became shoemakers. One was a Cordwainer apprentice to a shoemaker in a village of about 200 people but eventually became a shoemaker living with his mother and having his own business in a market town close by. I found him leaving a will and all his wordly goods of £35 to the Workhouse Master of the local Workhouse. He never married, and died aged 40. Perhaps the dog poo put any potential brides off. His brother had more sense and became a policeman and escaped from Northamptonshire to Hertfordshire. Heather Momentarily forgot about Norwich!! Janet
