Just put the name of the place and confirm that you get matches. It can also confirm whether the name is used for parish or town or both. MB Added by Marnie In Spain on 11/05/2005 19:32:16 sorry martin, but you have me totally confused now Sometimes I will be trying to find a Fred Bloggs born in Anytown. As usual the name has probably been mistranscribed and not finding any Bloggs at all in that location. It is only a small village or area of a town so I am not sure whether it gets records as a location on the census so I just search by the place name in 'parish' field and then in 'town' field. This now confirms that it is a location recorded by Ancestry so I can keep on trying. If it is not recognised then try a few variations or wildcards - this particularly the case in Wales where many place names have been badly mangled by both Ancestry and the original recording in the Census. Sometimes with a small village I will spot the family with their name mistranscribed. MB

Hi peeps, didnt expect so much response to this! Ive always used the first name and age only or whatever facility to try to find people but I only stumbled on this this morning because I was feeling dozey. Friend asked if I could find someone in a particular village and as that was on my mind I put in under residence the county and then the village clicked and there they all were. Ive used the ancestry parish census facility before but to be honest, trawling through those is pretty hard work, this alphabetical list is so much easier. If it doesnt work guys, try again as when I tried a second village I got the 'enter more details' stuff and then when I went back and tried again it worked. Ive got the uk site by the way so it must work with all the versions.

Thank you TC. Guess I won't be packing for my conference until later. I wonder how many people were living in Southampton, Greenwich and Shoreditch with names beginning with S?
