wow, this thread brings back memories!
roller skates, skipping--i had a skipping rope with handles on it!
playing war with the boys--us girls were the nurses!

british bulldog
post mans knock
tossing up the wall and going down into a crab---oohhhh how did i do it??
kiss chase--if you liked a boy--you slowed down so he could catch you---well, i did!!!

takeing your doll out in it's pram
a few years ago i saw a little girl out with her doll & pram and i thought--now there's a site you don't see to often now,and then she reached into her pram and brought out a--------mobile phone!!!!!!

haveing a bath sunday night--ready for school the next day--and watching "sunday night at the london palladium"!

and christmas was so simple then, we used to get:
annuals
table tennis set
dolls [for me]
knitting sets
skittles [ game, not sweets!!]
paint sets
colouring books and crayons
i remember getting a toy sewing machine--think that set me on my road to sewing!!!

but you enjoyed what you got!! i always wanted a doll with real hair--but i never got one cos dad said they were to expensive! all my dolls were bald!!
i remember haveing a teddy and that was bald too, cos i used to play hairdressers with it and cut all it's fur off!! and i put red lipstick on it!

remember getting the red smarties and wetting them and using them as lipstick? well, i did that and dad cought me once and said: "what have you got on?" "lipstick of the smarties i said" he said:"go and get it off, you look like a jambuttie!!!"LOL

i was born 1951.

This one has made me smile, I am a seventies baby, my mum and dad still have an outside loo I remember my dad he once he put a candle in there to defrost the pipes and the thing caught on fire!!!!!!

I can remember waking on a winters morning, the inside of the windows having ice on, the bed with loads of blankets and a hot water bottle and playing out in me boots in the snow and putting plastic bags over my socks to keep the water and cold out and coming in and warming my hands in front of the gas fire and getting "hot aches", sunday night having a bath and drying my hair in front of the fire. I used to go to the shop to buy my mum 10 no6 and going to the shop to use the phone. Where we poor or did others have to do that and going to the shop for a cake after school and going with 10p and asking for the penny tray"

Lassie made me cry too, and by gum did Dr Who scare the living daylights out of me too. Remembering playing on the street, having skipping rope and hopskotch and all that and french elastic playing May I, tiggy, Hide and Seek, Ice Cream and British Bull dog, not seen those metioned here!!

But you know what folks I have 2 kids, yeah they have the telly, but I give my kids some of what I have, my little girl plays on the street with her friend and the street is full of kids ranging from 5 -11, on their bikes, they go to bed with a bed time story and not a dvd in their room.

My kids play on the beach with bucket and spade burying their daddy they catch butterflies with a fishing net, feed the ducks, catching frogs, spiders and everything else.

And guess what we dont own a playstation, a Wii a nintendo ds, tv in their bedroom, dvd in their bedroom and we still bake cakes and biscuits!!!! And they love going to their grandparents and have chips fried in LARD, they never taste the same

I love this thread - I am 61 and remember many of the examples given - weren't we lucky, innocent, free and accepting of whatever our future held! We were also completely protected from anything nasty, which was happening all around us - it wasn't discussed or believed. It seems strange to think that all these things remembered are now part of history and amazing that I can now access my fathers family right back to 1796 in Wales - I know more about them than he ever did, he would be astounded that I never left home to do it! And I have traced them to Canada and made contact with descendants! And I'm talking to you. Roll on 2008.

Anyone rmember Bronco - Ty Harding - I was in love with him.

Thats some thing else we had then that seems to of gone out of fastion now a big garden, Ours was large enough to have a chicken run, sevrel rabbit huches, a run for the tortoise, and we still had room for all our veg and about 1/4 of an acer of Strawberries. ( Oh yes and My Marrow patch ). Today your lucky to have enough room to lie down and sun bathe. Our shed was as large as some gardens i'v seen, and I'm not kidding it was 20' by 15' and came as part of the house not some wooden pre-fab like today.

Hi Barbara, I had forgotten about those china eggs, yes we did have them. Our day old chicks were put in a cardboard box in front of the Aga cooker in the kitchen. Glad I am not the only one that did not like perserved eggs! Elizabeth

Elizabeth Anne Report 8 Feb 2005 17:30

We had lots of chickens and my mother put the surplus eggs in an old crock, perserving them in waterglas, it looked horrible, I hated it when she would ask me to take some out and wash them for her to use. Often a poor hen landed in the roasting pot on a Sunday. One day my brother was given orders to catch a hen. Well he did, hit the poor chicken on the head hoping it did not suffer to much, hung it in the shed for my mother to pluck. When my mother started to pluck it the chicken lifted its head and clucked away. I do not know who was shocked the most the chicken or my mother. All I know is that my brother refused to catch another chicken for Sunday lunch. My father had an allotment full of vegetables and gooseberry bushes. We had a huge cupboard in the living room and when you opened the doors it was lined up with rows and rows of bottled gooseberries. Oh they were sour, still do not like gooseberries to this day. I'm fed up of my kids telling me they're bored. Both have tv's, stereo's and computers. If I suggest riding their bikes, you'd think I'd swore at them. I remember cycling several miles to my grandma's on a saturday morning, then my dad would arrive later that day to take us (and bikes) home - well it was uphill. Andrea

You have brought back a lot of memories there. Haven't our children and now our Grandchildren missed out? You can not let the little perishers out of your sight, so they never do the things we did once out of site of our parents. I used to eat the tar too, was always covered in it during the hot summers! Plus we climbed the trees, dodged the 'parkie', and as was said put the hopscotch on the pavement, plus arrows when playing hare and hound. What fun we had.

I can remember sitting in the road on a very hot day with toffee apple stick making "tar balls" from the soft surface tar, getting on my white ankle socks and getting a spanking for it, also during ww2 when makeup was short my friend Rene (now my dear sister-in-law) came up with the idea of using cold cream on our face dusted off with suntan face powder to make us look like 2 Betty Grable"s, more like 2 Betty Messy's. Hope she doesnt see this as she will kill me. G

What a great thread, it has made me cry remembering some of the great things as a kids, I am not as old as some of the people adding messages (40) but we had an outside loo with newspaper and no light, I hated having to go at night dad always came with me because I was scared of the dark. Dad had to empty the loo into a cespit as it didn't flush, I always had to have a tin bath on Sundays in front of the fire ready for school, no calculators we could actually add up in our heads without using one, Mondays was wash day and I got to turn the handle of the mangle outside, the chip van called once a week as did the pop man, it was a real treat, I fished for stickelbacks in the beck and brought them back home in a jam jar tied with string, We had a pantry and the meat was hung up in it we stored the apples from the orchard in there and mum made all the jams cakes pies, bread etc, I don't know where she found the time, she blackleaded the fireplace and scrubbed the kitchen floor with red polish and the back door step. The door was never locked visitors and neighbours walked in there was always a kettle on the go on the fire, I was terrified of Dr Who and hid under the table peeping out from under the table cloth, tales of the river bank was brilliant with Hammy hamster, as was the proper noddy we only had a black & white telly you had to be really rich to have colour. No central heating, no double glazing, proper snowy winters or am I also just getting old and forgetful. I think life was better then, we appreciate things more now unlike our kids, progress and technology are great but old fashioned values should not be forgotten, shame we can't have some of the old things back the way they were.

Bit more to add, Going to my Grans and eating pressed meat she'd done herself, and loving it until i went one time and i saw her boiling a sheeps head. VERY careful what i had after that. If it wasn't tinned meat i wouldn't have a sandwich. I have an uncle who still loves to eat tripe and cow heels. thinking it was great to have a bath and look out of gran's kitchen window at the same time, until i realised if i could see out then they could see in.... Exploring her dressing up box and finding 'real pearls' and 'the Queens lost crown'. Losing my pants whilst paddling when we went to Weston super Mare, worst of all was gran asking everyone nearby if they'd seen them. The toffee factory on Saturday mornings, you could watch them make the toffee AND get a bag of toffee bits for 'nowt' if the right people were there. Asking a friend what beef burgers and yoghurt were. Getting a paper round at 13 and having to give half my 'wages' to my mother. Did i have it bad? Joan
