Maggie in Leics Report 1 Jan 2005 12:34

Still looking for my John BUTLER who had a chemist shop in Wharf Street in 1825. Following the line of someone said to be a cousin has brought me to a Thomas Henry BUTLER who I think is related to my John, but not sure how - could be a brother?? The IGI has a Thomas Henry BUTLER "born" in SYSTON, 13 Feb 1813 (parents Elizabeth and Henry BUTLER), and thanks to the kindness on someone one the rootsweb Leics list, what looks like the same chap on the 1851 census lists his birthplace as Leicester St Martins, has married a Syston girl, and in 1851 is working in Syston as a schoolmaster and Deputy Registrar. As a novice when it comes to official records, would welcome any suggestions as to how best to progress the search for the elusive John (who I think died between 1835 and 1839 having moved his business to Belgrave Gate). All suggestions welcome!! Thanks and Happy New Year to all. Maggie (about to launch into Charnwood up a gear mode - only 581 days to go!!)

Greeting's and Welcome Peter....... The only place I can think of for the full transcripts for 1851. will be in the Library of the Leicester & Rutland family History Society.. But at the moment they are closed and are moving, Or as a long shot you could enquire at your local LDS Centre they might be able to order a fiche for you to look at But there is a charge of £2.70p per fiche and a 5 working days notice required. But I too have the full transcript for Whitwick 1861, 1871,1881.1891. 1901. Plus 1841. and index for 1851. So If I can be of help just ask .... MIKE.

Im surprised you even had the energy to blow out your candle! LOL! I feel even worse knowing you up and doing lookups when I was happily snoring.... I shall give you some peace now, have a great new year, and thanks (again!) :-)) Sarah

F.A.O. BEVERLEY..... Have you looked at this Marriage ? (From 1837 site) April Quarter 1866. GEORGE GRANT. Leicester. Cert No. 7a 292. It's not at St. Margaret's Church. I've checked this out already for you. MIKE.

Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 31 Dec 2004 04:48

Good morning Sarah...... Right.... The reason I put up that death (1872) was due to the age and name. But now I've rechecked the 1871 Census and see that John Pick(25) & Mary Ann Pick(20) were living in Leicester Road Syston. With Henry and Stephen. It will be interesting to see the Death cert when you get it.... Now to the big hunt....... 1. Mary Smith /Goodman / Pick. Tells big porkies about her age..... Found her in 1861. Aged 10. in Smeeton Westerby. Daughter of Joseph & Martha Smith (nee Shipley ?) (the only Martha matching her age & surname in Smeeton in 1841.) They had nine children in total aged from 17 ~ 2. And next door but one is a....... GOODMAN Family... anyway don't think that's the connection....... On that 1881. Census for South Knighton Lodge... The Sarah Barsby (born in Billesdon) had been married before to a David Goodman (born in Stonton Wyville) and lived in Tur Langton. hence the birthplace for Elizabeth aged 12. So for now I'm assuming Mary married a son from this marriage so to be come a dau in law = ( Sons wife) or could it be a daughter to Sarah? ( pass caring at his time of day ....lol :0)). ) But Mary's still leading us a merry chase and not been found yet in the years 1861 ~ 81. Several possibilities going her birth place ( Smeeton) But due to her porkies about her age can't pin her down... Anyway time to blow out this candle ...... MIKE.

Righty ho, am back again Mike, somewhat less confused, but still a bit dizzy! Thankyou for the hefty amount of lookups, you are a star. The marriages all fit perfectly with what I know, the death of Mary Pick in Syston also. I am not so sure about the 1872 death, I had seen this on 1837, but the death was registered in Leicester. I found another in 1874, Mary Pick, aged 24, registered in Barrow on Soar, which covered Syston. I think that is my Marys. Am awaiting the certificate. I cannot imagine how you would think any of mine would have been in unconsecrated graves (Yeah right lol, I think they all are!) Re the census, I agree with all you have on these. My main thing now is this: If Mary Goodman was previously Mary Smith (father Joseph, according to marriage info), then how come her father in law was Henry Barsby as per the 1881?? Could she have been married to a Barsby, before Goodman then Pick???? I'll let you consider that one! (Bring back the Hincks!) Sarah
