HI to all, can someone please confirm that I have read this thread correctly. When I go to my contacts and see allow this means that they CAN'T see my tree and if it says remove that they CAN see my tree. I am completely confused and if this correct very angry with GR as I feel they have a duty to protect our privacy if this is what we want and it would appear from alot of the replies that we all like to be in control of the info we post on this site . I am now taking my tree off this site. Sorry for the rant . Regards to you all, Angie.

Ken Every time they contact me (not often) its to let me know they are glad I am pleased with the changes. On the contrary, before they changed the site I suggested making some things - especially the Genealogy Resources section - clearer and more obvious. What did they do? Make it impossible to find the Genealogy Resources section unless you know where to look to start with! Not my idea of an improvement. They also did not address my concerns about people seeing my tree. It's only recently I've read about the tick box - I can't say I've found mine! It's as elusive as my great-grandfather! nell

I have just sent my e-mail off! I also only found this feature by accident after allowing my tree to be viewed....

I emailed GR last week with the same suggestion of having default as not allowing access. As yet I am still awaiting a reply. Karen

I totally agree with everything that others have said. I have had loads of requests to view my tree and someone opened there tree to me and there was only him on it!!!! Can I suggest that we all contact GR direct, en masse, so to speak? Perhaps if they get inundated with comments they may listen to their members. Margaret

Yes of course it shouldn't be like this. The best thing surely would be to put a give a full choice. "Do you want this person to be able to view your tree" then 2 boxes - both unticked - and make it compulsory for you to click on one or the other before your message can be sent. Then there can be no confusion. Oh and while we are moaning - why can we STILL after all this time NOT TYPE A WEB ADDRESS on these boards grrrrrrrrr Maz. XX

Hi christine difficult to explain isn't it! lol That's peculiar then cos I was talking to a member last night who had to go through virtually all of her contacts and disallow them. My understanding is that if another member contacts you first and then you reply, then permission to view your tree won't be granted. But if you contact them first that's when the checked box appears. And if you don't uncheck it, that's when you give permission to view your tree. Like to know whether this is anybody elses experience Jeanette x

I agree that the choice should not be automatically ticked and/or that the box should be at the top of the page. Since the email alterations I've always suggested to positive contacts that we change to personal contact off the site. Peter in Kent

I Believe that this box should state do not allow poeple access to my tree and that is should be ticked only if you wish to permit this. It does occur to me also on some threads where people have been upset that people have used information on their tree that this is where the slip up has been, and that they have unwittingly allowed access to their tree by accident, not taking the tick out the box. Hello everyone, I think I need help understanding this one! When I send a message to someone through the site I had honestly never noticed the tick/untick box, so I've checked and it is set with a tick. Now that should mean therefore that everyone that I have mailed through the site then can view my tree, as I have NEVER unticked it? Howcome then when I go to my home page and click on "update tree permissions" it shows me everyone who I have contacted, (with the tick in place remember)but NOT that they can view my tree? The only ones who can are those that I have personally given permission to. All the rest still have ALLOW beside their name. Although the wording is confusing it is my understanding that I have to then click on ALLOW to let them view tree. The ones with REMOVE beside their name are the ones I have already allowed and if I want to now stop them seeing it I would click on the REMOVE and it would then change back to ALLOW and they could no longer view it? I'm sorry to be so long-winded about this, but why doesn't it show there that they have permission if that's what they get when you mail them with the tick in place? Hopefully someone will decipher what I've been babbling on about and put me straight! confused Christine

Is it possible to block details of your living rellies when you allow others to view your tree, without having to take them off completely??

Joan Allan

Joan Allan Report 21 Oct 2004 01:45

As a researcher who often helps people out on these boards I often get asked to open my tree to those I contact. I NEVER have anyone in my tree that will assist searchers in their quest so I believe that the tick box should automatically be 'don't allow access to my tree'.

cazzabella Report 21 Oct 2004 01:14

What also makes me cross about this is that we have to seek the permission of any living person before we add them to the site, and rightly so. I've done that and I've assured all the living members in my family that their info remains private unless I think there's a very good chance that we share a family connection with someone. Surely then GC also has a responsibility to them, to make their info as secure as possible. Can't see that's happening here, not if 'allowing' contacts to see my tree is the the default option. When my subscription ran out earlier this year I did not renew straight away. However when I eventually did renew all my original contacts were still there and ALL had permission to view my tree - but I did not realise this until just recently. Also I did not see the ticked box until I read a message on here so everyone I have contacted since has also been allowed to see it. There are only one or two people to whom I have willingly given permission to view so I am really annoyed about this. Part of the reason I didn't renew immediately was because I was not happy with some of the changes, but this was one I didn't know about until recently and one I am definitely not happy with. Another thing which has changed but not for the better is the emails. Now everyone is under contact@genesreunited rather than with an identifiable name so that I can store them in some sort of order. I know that I can lookup on the My Contacts list, but I would really like to bunch emails to and from the same person together in my own email system.
