Hi Jo Try putting quotation marks " first. I had the same problem trying to enter the forename May cos it is a month of the year too. So I typed "May and it worked. Jeanette

Jeanette Off the top of my head I can't think of anything useful, unless next time you want to siton my shoulder and whisper words of encouragement?!! Yes it's my first piece - each vessel has its own page which helps - at least I know when I get to the end there's hope that the next chap's handwriting will be readable! Anyway it's fun, it's free and keeps me out of mischief for a couple of hours. Jan

Jan 100? Blinking Heck! What do you do then, sit and write them all out by hand then type them up when you get home? Is this your first piece? I bet your wishing you never volunteered! lol. It's bad enough trying to read the English names so it must be very difficult doing foreign ones. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. Jeanette

I had a very frustrating time at the library yesterday. I'm transcribing from fiche (hence the library visit) for South Shields vessels. Obvioulsy some are from other countries which means a lot of foreign names. That's OK when you can read them, but the handwriting!!! Arrrrggghhh! I had to admit defeat with some of them - there was no way of even guessing what the names could be. Oh well, the joys of transcribing... By the way Jeanette, there are 100 images on each fiche!

Hi Jeanette, I ordered my second disc when I sent off the transcription of the first disc. After 5 weeks I contacted my co-ordinator who checked to make sure the disc was on order. He said there was a backlog of several weeks so I asked him to order another one for me thinking the second one would come soon and I'd have finished it before the third one arrived!!!! And I'm still waiting!! I think I was getting withdrawal symptoms so decided to do some for BMD - I've almost finished my second batch - they are so quick to do from a typed sheet and not much deciphering to do!! Might take me longer from the hand-written sheets though. Von

Hi Von Do we really have to wait that long for our next discs? I knew there was a bit of a backlog but I didn't realise it would be so long. I'm getting withdrawl symptoms! lol. I'm doing some transcribing for YorkshireBMD in the meantime and that's a doddle too. So much so that I seem to be requesting more transcriptions every other day. Bet they're sick of me at Leeds register office! lol Jeanette

Hi Ann, Well done if you've finished!! (Big pat on the back!!) I sent mine as an attachment to an email too, and have kept it on the computer (just in case). I'm still waiting for my next discs - 8 weeks now!! So I'm doing some transcribing for BMD - after the census it's a doddle!! Von

When my next discs come I will transfer it off my computer just in case. Do we take it you've finished yours then Ann? Jeanette
