Hi guys! Yes, I've done 9 vessels (all on separate pages) and sent them off and Carol has made just a few changes! What a relief! Shame it's back to work next week - won't get much done now. Before you all think I must be doing loads of work - most vessels so far have only had two or three names to enter! Jan

Same here Jo Ann Carol is my co-ordinator too. She told me that it wasn't absolutely necessary to write in the comments column if I didn't want to. But I have continued to do so as I feel that most times it is necessary - especially if you have more than one query per batch of columns (hope that makes sense!). I will carry on putting comments in column Y until I am told otherwise. Jeanette

I wouldnt worry Ann. Carol has told me to write an explanation to a query I had. I have continued to do it for anything I'm not certain of.

Now Iam worried about adding in the comments column, since reading your replies I have been adding comments so do I take it that Carol--as she is my co-ordinator too doesn't see the need to add a comment and just put in the x? I think I may ring her or send her what I have done up to now. Worried from Darlington!!!

Hi, I would have thought an explanation would be easier for the checker to look at the problem. I think it all gets checked again another 2x. Youre best doing what your coordinator thinks is right I suppose.

Rick My co-ordinator said I could leave the explanation column blank if I wanted. The reason for this being that the co-ordinators have to delete it all, so obviously your co-ordinator doesn't like you to make a lot of work for her! lol Sometimes though I feel it's necessary to put an explanation. Hi Jan, I put it instead of the whole name on the advice of my coordinator. She didn't seem to approve of putting some letters and either question marks or hyphens in the gaps. She also didn't like anything in the comments column to explain either. Don't know if this is her personal preference or a general thing, but she did say they were updating the instructions. It makes it a lot quicker to transcribe though if you do what she said ! Rick.

Rick thanks! At least I was getting the x right! Just to be absolutely clear - I put a hyphen instead of the name, or in place of letters I can't read? Jan

Rick

Rick Report 3 Jun 2004 13:30

Hi Jan, Put a hyphen for anything you can't read and then an x in the next query column. My coordinator didn't like the use of question marks at all. Rick.

Hi guys! Have started transcribing vessels - not too difficult although I discovered I'd put the vessel's name in the wrong place! However - quick question - when you can't read a name what do you put? I've been putting a question mark where there is a letter I can't read. I'm sure that's not right! Any suggestions (please)? Hi everyone Serves me right for bragging about finishing my piece. My co-ordinator, Carol is sending me 2 discs next! lol Actually it's not as bad as it seems. My 15 year old, Rosie, has been taking an interest in what I've been doing so she said if I show her the ropes she'll do a bit. Bless! Jeanette

Hi Jan Yes I suppose it will work out expensive that way. I'd never really stopped to think about how many photocopies would have to be done. Now, thinking about how many pages I've gone through on the disc, I see what you mean. Might have to save that one til I win the lottery then! lol Jeanette

Hi Jeannette I've been away (camping - no rain!!!) so have only just seen your comment. The library said copies were 25p each - there must be 30 pieces per fiche - it would get quite expensive. Now if I had a laptop it would be easier..! Will wait to find out what to do with my sailors and fishermen before tackling any others. Jan

Rick I'm glad it's getting easier to read. I hit a bad patch in the middle of mine and it makes it such hard going. I've sent my finished piece off now so I'm waiting for the next one. Glutton for punishment or what! Jeanette

Hi Jeanette, That's really sweet of you but I was joking ! I'm on a mission here and I don't give up easily. The last couple of pages were easier to read so I'm on a bit of a run now. Have only got to get to page 50 and then it's plain sailing. Thanks :-) Rick.

Hiya Rick Just couldn't help crowing there! I'm feeling quite pleased with myself. If you can think of a way of doing it I don't mind. I'm trying to get some fiche back off someone who has given up but she doesn't seem to want to part with them! My guess is she's spilled her cuppa on them and ruined them but won't own up! lol I've got a bit of transcribing to do for YorkshireBMD but I'll help out if you want. Jeanette

Hi Jan Does your local records office have a fiche reader with photocopier attached? I was of the understanding that you photocopied the pages and then took them home to transfer onto your spreadsheet. Would love to know as I'm hoping to do some from fiche if I can get tham back off the woman who's got them. Jeanette

Ann That's what I have to do - if I had a fiche reader at home I guess I could do it straight to the computer! I'm just hoping I've thought to write down all the vital bits of information! Jan
