I've gone mad and e mailed her about it. It's something I've thought about but always been a bit worried, but I may as well see what it involves and then make a decision.

Hi, I got my CD and was really suprised at the quality. You down load the things you need from the site, it's in excel form you put the information. Not scary at all, just a form to fill in what you see on the census. There are some codes to use for areas etc. but nothing complicated. You can pick from the list thats on my earlier posting of what you want to transcribe, it's sent to you by post. I was a bit worried at first but I'd like to add "my bit" to help and the more people who do it, more census we can see!. There is no pressure and Carol Barber has been so helpful and very friendly. I have only seen CD versions of census so I cant say what a fich would be like, what I have is very easy to read.

I've thought about doing it, but I too worry how hard it may be to read. What is the difference on picture quality of fiche and cd

Hi Jo So how easy is it really?! And can you choose which areas to transcribe - of course depending on if there's a CD for that area. Jeanette

FREECEN is a volunteer based project involved with transcribing census material which is uploading to the internet for researchers to search free of charge. We are in need of more volunteers and below is a list of areas that are available on CD but if you have a fiche reader then we would welcome you to join us too to transcribe the 1891 census - which is available for all counties in England, Scotland and Wales. There is no time limit for transcribing - just whatever time you can give or want to give. We are all volunteers and have other commitments such as families, work etc so any time you can give is gratefully appreciated by FREECEN but also fellow genealogists. If you have not seen the website, then please do http(://)freecen(.)rootsweb(.)com and see if you can find any ancestors - fingers crossed you do. If you have any questions or would like further information then please do contact myself Carol Barber at carol.barber AT b l u e y o n d e r(.)co(.)uk and I will be in touch as soon as possible. (Remove the brackets and spaces) Thanks for taking your time to read this message and hopefully I will be welcoming some new volunteers on board this worthwhile project. I have recently been transcribing for Freecen from CD. They are in need of more volunteers. A message from Carol Barber my Co-ordinator in the next message. It isn't hard to do, not if I can do it! "Michelle is having difficulty in finding someone to take on parishes in Nairn. She has almost finished the 1841 and has started on the 1851 for Aberdeen. I have almost completed the transcriptions for 1841 Angus and am now in the process of checking and validating. I would still appreciate more volunteers for that, too."
