Police records?

Does anyone know how to get hold of old police records? I'm trying to track down my great grandfather and I've been told that he attempted suicide (which used to be illegal) because his wife was a husband beater when she was drunk. What a lovely woman!! How old do the files have to be before they are available and where do I go to ask about it? Any other information would also be helpful. The area I'm certain this is from is Bradford, West Yorkshire.
