Thank you HORACE BENNETT for your kind efforts. Following a suggestion from another member, I E.mailed the Census Helpdesk, and got a very helpful and prompt response. One suggestion they made was as follows: "Due to the dynamic nature of the site you will experience difficulties if you try to access the site through a search engine. You will also experience difficulties using the site if you store the website address in `Favourites`. It is for this reason we recommend that you enter www.census.pro.gov.uk in the address bar EACH time you wish to access the 1901 Census online service." I was, in fact, using a site address stored in my favourites. All is well now.
