Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 31 Oct 2007 21:59

*** F.A.O. ***….Elaine.

Leicester Journal Friday 28th. February 1868.

Page. 8. ½ way down in the last column on right hand side.

SUICIDE IN LEICESTER.

On Monday last an inquest was held in the Parish of St. Margaret’s
Before J. Gregory Esq. Coroner On the body of Hannah Powell.
Who committed suicide by taking “ LAUDANUM “
The deceased was the wife of Thomas Powell. A boatman
residing in Foundry Lane. and was 54.years old.
For the last two ~ three weeks She had been very curious in her manner
And more particularly Friday last.
On that day She hardly spoke to any members of her family
And in the course of that evening She went out several times and finally returned about half past nine of the clock.
She then went into the yard and was absent above half an hour.
Her Daughter went out with a light to seek her and found her in the closet
In a stupefied condition and with an ale glass by her side
She led her into the house and on the way through the yard found a small bottle
On the ground labelled “ Laudanum ~ Poison. Teear’s of Belgrave-gate”
Her Father, Who had gone to bed was called up, and her other Sister was sent to Mr Teear to inquire the quantity of Laudanum the deceased that brought
And it was found that She had purchased Three penny’s worth.
Dr. Thompson was also called in
The deceased seemed to get better until Saturday afternoon,
then changed for the worse and died Sunday morning.
The deceased had been subject to fits for up wards of Thirty years and though she had advice from the first commencement of these fits
no one seemed to do her good.

Dr. Thompson attributed the death to narcotic poisoning which had been taken by the deceased when her mind was in an impaired and weakened state from the effects of the fits which she had been so long subjected to..

Verdict :~ “ INSANITY “

So there you have the sad truth…. Sorry…..

Thank you Mike,

This is what I was afraid of, especially as I could find no record of Mary in subsequent censuses. I am in touch with her daughter's great granddaughter who lives in Canada and we were trying to solve a few puzzles.

I have the family's baptismal records and previous census' show them as coming from Kimcote

Thank you for taking the time to look this up for me, especially with your recent sad news

Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 28 Oct 2007 23:10

Greeting’s Again Alison………..

OK we’ll start with the marriage ? :~

St. Margaret’s Parish. Leicester.
Entry No.194, JUN 24, 1872, after Banns
WILLIAM MAWBY, 21, Bachelor. Shoe Nailer, Of Wheat St,
Son. of JOHN MAWBY, GAS MAN.

MARY STRETTON, 22, Spinster. of Providence Place, Eaton St,
Daughter. of THOMAS STRETTON, Frame Worker Knitter.
Wits: JOHN STRETTON, MARY STRETTON.
( which makes Mary’s year of birth 1850. )

I had a look at that 1871 census return
RG 10 / 3273 / 107 / Page. 21.

But can not see where the Village of Kimcote cum Walton is given for Mary’s place of birth ALL Birth places given as Leicester

Now we go to the 1881 Census returns
RG 11 / 3168/ 86 / Page. 12.

We get William as a Son in Law within the household of Ephraim & Ann Morton.

William is classed as a WIDOW aged 29. Shoe Finisher. Born Leicester.
Also with him…….
Sarah Ann Daughter aged. 13. and
Emma Daughter aged 6 Months old.

I have trawled Burial Discs Plus BMD Records
For a death / burial for Mary.

The closest I could find was a Death in

Jan. ~ Feb ~ Mar Qrt. 1881.
Mary Mawby
the Lutterworth District.
Cert No. 7a. 1.

(But NO age given. )

Sorry......

Alison Report 28 Oct 2007 19:04

Am looking for information on Mary Stretton (b.1852) and William Mawby - Mary was born in Kimcote & Walton to Thomas and Mary (nee Jesson). In 1871 census she was living with her parents and siblings in Providence Place, Leicester, including her daughter Mary Ann (b.1869). She married William Mawby in 1872 but from there I have lost her.
Can anyone help?

Thanks for info mike. I've looked through the whole of Soar Lane on 1861 census and can't find anyone that looks like it could be Catherine Tailby or her father.

The age 35 on 1861 census Catherine i have pretty much eliminated as not being mine as she is on later censuses where i have also found my Catherine as Catherine Cave after she married

I joined the Cave family history society last week so i think i will ask them if any of the members are from that branch and see if any one has found anything

Thanks for trying anyway

Hi Mike
I read it all in the Leicester mercury and the comments of neighbours saying she was a lovely girl
i to hope she rests in peace after what she suffered through local youths who think its fun to harrass vunerable people.
My daughter lives in barwell i hope she never comes across any of this
Best wishes Bev xxx

GREETING’S FOLKS……..

Thank you one & all for kind thoughts
Which my family and myself do appreciate at this sad time………

I visited the site of the Car fire this afternoon to lay my floral tributes.
Plus to help me come to terms with the whole thing
I Then visited Fiona’s Mother & Father to hear at first hand the reasoning behind this tragic event……….

I now hope in my heart that Fiona & Frankie will rest In peace
And will be free of the local youth harassment which drove her to do this……

Does any one know where i might find Soar Lane on the 1861 census, i think my missing Catherine Tailby may be there as the address on her marriage certificate looks like that although its very faint.
