I'm going to be in Leicester from Wednesday till Sunday, and I'll try to call in at the Records Office while I'm over.

Is it too late to book a place, Mike?

John Report 6 Feb 2008 18:19

English Bob Report 31 Jan 2008 22:55

..Mike, again you are on form, very little industrial work in Loughboro' at that time, so Hostler, Ostler is very good. Did you get a scan?

I would rather build a new family group around a man who knows horses than a guess date in Notts.

Had a quick look on the IGI, very little nfo for L'boro those 5 years

Stay in touch, regards Bob

Fiche DE 667./ 5. One of Five fiches.

All Saints Parish Church. Loughborough.

Reads thus :~

BAPTISMS and BURIALS ANNO DOMINI :~ 1792.

APRIL. :~

Thomas Son of John COOKE ( Hosler )
And Rebekah his Wife.
Baptised 27th.

Now I could read ( Hosler )
Two ways…..
Either Hosier ( Knitting ) But the I was NOT dotted.
Plus the up stroke was further up than a i in lowercase.

Or

A poor spelling of Ostler ( Groom ) this could match up with Coachman duties ?

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Jan 2008 20:15

The two birthplaces (Oundle and Shepshed) both come from the censuses - no idea which one's correct.

There's no matching baptism for him on the IGI in either place, so you'll need to check the parish registers.

I've passed it on to a fellow Eld who keeps the database for us and I know she will be interested in the 2 birth places you mention for James. Am unsure whether she realised one was a Held until your correction
Thanks for the info

No problem, I've done the same thing myself :-)

Was the information any use, or did you have it already?

Felt such a fool the moment I sent it and realised it was you, been waiting ever since for the cringe factor when you spotted it!!!

Hi Elaine,

I got the message you sent through Ancestry about James (H)eld, which I've replied to.

I guessed you hadn't realised it was me :-)

Calling Mary O'Italy

I do believe I have just sent you a message with regards to James (H)Eld on Ancestry. Trying to decipher a couple of them at the moment mainly Ann Eld daughter of George, who was at Syston Street 1877 when she married a John Frederick Plummer. There is more in the other message I sent and I know it's distant to you but wondered if you were any further on with them that might help me. As soon as I pressed the send button, I knew who I had sent the message to !!! Sorry to double up
