ROYALTY OR REPUBLIC

United Nations have said the UK should consider if we are to retain the Royal Family.

The UN's Human Rights Council said the Government should 'think' about holding a referendum on the issue, to see if people would prefer to live in a Republican state with a written constitution.
The monarchy costs each adult in Britain around 62p a year - but even groups representing taxpayers said there was no case for getting rid of it.
The council has 29 members including Saudi Arabia, Cuba and Sri Lanka.
It was the Sri Lankan envoy who raised concerns over the British monarchy.
But a Royal spokesman has said the public haven't haven't displayed any appetite for a referendum.
The UN report was also critical of the UK's treatment of immigrants from Sudan.
Syria accused the UK of discriminating against Muslims and Iran complained about the UK's record on tackling sexual discrimination

Next thing will be that they will all gang up and vote against the UK in the Eurovision song contest, or some other nonsense like that.

The Royal family does attract tourists, it's nicer to have them than a President....anyone can have a President. Besides don't Presidents cost money too? I honestly couldn't bear a President AND a Prime Minister. I think Royalty do far less harm than a President.

Can you imagine the hours and hours of boring news coverage we'd have to endure each time we had to elect a President? At least we only have 1 Coronation per King/Queen. It was bad enough when London was electing a Mayor and that was nothing to do with the rest of the country.

This is interesting, a similar thread a while back had a much more anti Royal response. Have we changed our views or seen through politicians to see what they are actually really like

I think they probably will want a world wide President eventually so they want us to get rid of Royalty now.

After all, why would anyone be bothered with our Royal family if they're not causing any harm and they're not living here? Very suspicious to me.

They should be spending their time on human rights issues rather than upsetting Liz and Phil lol

Examples of Presidents that I wouldn't wish on your worst enemy:

President Bush

and even worse President Mugabe (you cannot even vote to get rid of him)

I could think of one or two here in the UK, don't need to go abroad. Possibly a darn sight worse than Bush !!!!

The things is John, we'd probably end up with a President AND a Prime-minister. We'd have to put up with 2 of them!
