A couple of years ago when I was doing my Christmas shopping I came across a website which was about spending no money at all at Christmas.

I read it out of interest because I do try to economise and get good deals on things but that particular group of people were extolling the virtues of literally spending nothing at all.

I thought about it then realised it really wasn't such a great idea. If you think of all the people employed in making Christmas goods, toymakers, caterers and especially retailers whose main sales are around Christmas, then, if we all stopped spending, millions of people would be unemployed very quickly.
A lot of charities also depend on selling Christmas stuff to fundraise.

Often things are a lot more complicated than they first appear.

I would really like to see a rather more even distribution of wealth so the very poor and helpless were better taken care of but the extremely rich in this world (if not miserly with their money) keep a lot of other people in work.

Perhaps society rewards some celebrities too much for what they do but I suppose if a footballer (for example) is very popular then creating goods with his name on will give some people work. Building his luxury home will employ builders, architects, home decorators etc and so pass a lot of money down the line.

If I had 5 million to spare then I wouldn't spend it on a wedding because I can think of a lot more things I'd rather do with that which would give me more lasting pleasure but I've no idea what proportion of that couple's wealth that represents. Perhaps they are so rich that it feels like only a few thousand and they won't notice it.

Being a bit of a Devil's Advocate here......if someone has a lot of money then (even if it isn't someone else's choice) they can spend it however they wish.

Money is only wasted if it is burned or hidden under mattress! If it is spent it doesn't disappear, it simply is passed on to other people who may then choose to give some of it away.

I don't know anything about this case but many of the super rich do contribute to charities and often in a big way. They also employ others.

I personally believe that many people are paid far too much for some jobs. I can't understand why footballers for example become superstars and multi millionaires. I do think that no-one in the world should be hungry or homeless while others are being paid vast sums to kick a ball or strut down a cat walk in designer clothes but I think I'm all in favour of the seriously rich spending as much of their money as possible.

Been thinking about this one and I reckon that if someone has that sort of money then spending it like this could be seen as redistribution of wealth!

Consider this.......all that money has been spread about and presumably a lot of people paid for a lot of services. They in turn will spend it on things and so that 5 million is now back in the economy.

I suppose money was spent on catering, hotels, clothes, jewellery, flowers etc etc. These are normally provided by people who have far less money and in times of recession may be grateful for a large commission.

I wouldn't spend all that money on a wedding if even if I had it but as far as I can see any money spent by the wealthy is passed on.

Lot of money for a piece of paper-& if it goes wrong costs thousands more to get rid of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
