I wonder if you could run a piece of software for me which may do the trick or at least help us a little.

You need to download and install DriverMax from:

http://www.download.com/DriverMax/3000-2098_4-10572602.html?tag=toprated

If you are unsure of how to do this give me a shout.

eRRolSheep Report 16 Jun 2008 20:18

ok if it isn't too much give that a try and then at least we know whether the drive is up the creek or not.
Incidentally, did it give you the option to rollback the driver?

I don't have another computer here but I could ask a friend to bring their's over in the week and try that. Thanks Errol.

If you have access to another computer try the drive in that machine and see if it makes any difference.

yes it does say that

no I don't really want to try manually Errol, I might leave it and see if I can get a new one soon.

Thanks very much for all your help I do appreciate it.

ok one other thing to try is a system rollback but I don't particularly want to go down that route if possible.
Do you want to try to manually replace the drivers? This will be a bit long winded with no guarantee of success.
Incidentally, does it still say "This device is working properly"?

ok it did an internet search but said cannot find a better match

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 19:33

ok will try update again

eRRolSheep Report 16 Jun 2008 19:31

Thought so lol
I doubt very much whether this will now make a difference but try the update driver option again and tell it to search on the internet.
Another thing we can try after that is a manual install of drivers and you may want to just double check that the connecting cables are pushed right in (when the machine is switched off!) although, again, I don't think that is the problem.

On the third one, is there no slash between system32 and NTIDrvr.sys?

skwirrel 1

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 19:14

ok it says exactly the same

C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32C:\WINDOWS\system32NTIDrvr.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UBHelper.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll

and the ticks are the same

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 18:57

You can open the drawer by pushing something like a straightened out paperclip into the little hole by the drive.
Can you go through the process of listing the drivers again for me so I can see if anything has changed?

skwirrel 1

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 18:54

no and the drawer won't open to give me my cd back lol
