~~~Secret Red ^^ Squirrel~~~ **007 1/2** Report 18 Jun 2008 07:24
Cyd Charisse danced with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly in some of Hollywood's finest musicals - The Band Wagon and Silk Stockings with Astaire, and Singin' in the Rain and Brigadoon with Gene Kelly.
She was one of the most brilliant and beautiful female dancers ever to appear on the big screen.
With the decline of big musicals she took straight roles, but not with the same success.
Cyd Charisse was born Tula Finklea in Amarillo, Texas, in 1921, she was six when she began dance lessons to strengthen her muscles after a bout of polio.
She went on to study ballet and, at the age of 18, married Nico Charisse, her instructor.
She became known as Sid when she was a child - the nearest her brother could get in his attempt to say Sis. Later, when she signed for MGM, she changed the spelling to Cyd.
Just Googled and found that Cyd was still married to Tony Martin, what a record for Hollywood.
Tony Martin still singing with good reviews at the age of 95.
I always thought he was one of the Italian singers along with Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Co, but would appear he was Jewish. - You live and learn.
Deanna Report 18 Jun 2008 11:44
Yes I knew she was married to Tony Martin... another of my great loves... but is he REALLY still sing at that age?
She was a beautiful woman and a wonderful dancer.
Both of them gave me many, many hours of pleasure... thanks Cyd... RIP
Mauatthecoast Report 18 Jun 2008 11:52
So do I Ann,always fun and cinemagoers came out feeling happy! sister and I always danced our way home :O)
I didn't know Tony Martin was still singing,beautiful voice......."Take my hand I'm a stranger in Paradise"!!
Mauatthecoast Report 18 Jun 2008 11:54
Take my hand
I'm a stranger in paradise
All lost in a wonderland
A stranger in paradise
If I stand starry-eyed
That's the danger in paradise
For mortals who stand beside an angel like you
I saw your face and I ascended
[ Stranger In Paradise lyrics found on ]
Out of the commonplace into the rare
Somewhere in space I hang suspended
Until I know there's a chance that you care
Won't you answer this fervent prayer
Of a stranger in paradise?
Don't send me in dark despair
From all that I hunger for
But open your angel's arms
To this stranger in paradise
And tell him that he need be
A stranger no more
........sorry Lesley just felt a song coming on! lol
She was very special. Those legs seemed to go on for ever :)
My favourite Tony Martin song was Tenement Symphony. Wonderful voice.
