I've been there!
Well to Vancouver Island, but not Shawnigan lake. We spent our honeymoon on the Island.

I agree with Shy, the ferry ride over from the mainland has to be one of the most picturesque that I have ever seen. I live about 40 mins away from one of the ferry terminals (Horseshoe Bay)

Shawnigan Lake is a small town, more of a bedroom community. Not too far away is our provincial capital Victoria. Victoria is very touristy, but in a nice way. The museum is a good place to go, and of course the Empress Hotel for afternoon tea. Victoria is known for the beautiful hanging baskets that adorn the lamposts that line the streets.

To the north west is Toffino, one of the places I love to visit. If you go there (Toffino) I can recommend staying at Middle Beach Lodge. There is an adult only lodge there that we stay in. The last time we were there a few years ago I didn't want to leave there as it was that peaceful. No TV's!

Of course you are just a ferry ride (2 hours) away from Vancouver :)
If you need any more info, please feel free to PM me.

I have a photo of George Vancouver statue which I took last week in King's Lynn, he is the person the area was named for I think it said on the plaque.
