A leather-bound diary with a brass clasp and lock (lacking key; the locking mechanism being at the permanently open position), 6.5 inches x 4.5 inches (16 cms x 11 cms); containing over 260 pages of closely-written daily diary entries during the years 1863-64 by Charles William Ewing, a fifteen-year old schoolboy of Norwich , hand-written in ink, in a legible hand.

19th century official copy of Charles' birth certificate is loosely inserted at the rear of the diary.

Charles was born on the 11th June 1848 at Eaton, in the district of Mancroft, Norwich, Norfolk, to Anna Elizabeth Ewing, formerly Crickmay, the wife of John William Ewing, of Eaton, Nursery-man.
