I have inherited a book of useful suggestions from my dear Nan called Hints, Recipes and Remedies of a Bygone Age.

This will surely come in handy -

"TO CLEAN WHITE KID GLOVES"
Put the gloves on and sponge them with skimmed milk. Then lightly rub them with kitchen soap and sponge again with milk. Change the milk as soon as it looks dirty. Finish off with a careful rinse in skimmed milk. Put the gloves to dry away from direct heat and sun, but before they are bone dry, gently stretch them in all directions.

I couldn't find my kid gloves- and i looked everywhere!! I would worry that not rinsing the glove out would leave them a little smelly!!

Stray, nearest I could find - to treat iron burns or rust.
"Mix 2oz of white wine vinegar with 1/4 oz of table salt and 1/3 oz of grated household soap. Rub the mixture into the marks well and rinse with tepid water.

Now i know you ladies (and any gents that may be around) will appreciate this one.

TO SOOTHE CHAPPED HANDS
Simmer a handful of marsh mallow leave in 2oz. of lard for half an hour. When it is quite cold, rub the cream into your hands, preferably at night before going to bed.

I wonder if there's a bit later on on how to get lard and marsh mallow stains out of your sheets! lol
