Thinking about trying to set up a group locally but need some encouragement.

Any comments/advice welcomed.

Um... what's a red hatter? (at the risk of sounding like she knows nothing)

Warning

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

ahhhhhhhh Thanks for shedding light on it Squirrel. Red isn't my colour but I can totally get away with purple LOL Are the hats compulsory?

Can my mum be an honorary member?

She's had that poem for years, and of course passed it on. I'm not quite there yet, but will be soon!

Of course, my mum always figures I'm "there" already. We were talking about some shopping once, and she said -- Have you signed up for ...? and stopped herself.

And I knew exactly what she was about to say. We're on the same wavelength, me and my mum.

I said: You were just about to ask me whether I've signed up for Sears' seniors' discount package, weren't you?! It's a department store promotion for people over 55. At the time, I was 45. She admitted it, she was. ;)

Me me... i've already started to practice, lol.... Liz, I don't think it matters as long as it is outrageous and doesn't suit you. Or is inappropriate for the weather..... or sommat like that!! Breaking all the rules of so called good taste just for the h*** of it and to embarrass our offspring/ younger generation now that we are older....

We frequent the horse races here. A few years ago we were "taken over" by red and purple! My first introduction to these fun loving women :))

My mum always used to say "Red hat, no knickers" I often wonder if I see anyone in a red hat. Elaine.

My friend is a Red Hatter and has recently come back from America where they had a meet up / conference. She had a brilliant time.
She does so much socially with the group... I'm quite envious.
